I lost my job

I was pulled into my bosses office yesterday after I got back from lunch and was informed that I was being laid off due to corporate pressure for cuts. I had been a full time employee and my SO works part-time since he is still in the early stages of getting his degree.I broke down when my boss told me. I am scared, angry, confused, just so many different emotions since this is a first for me. I'm not sure another employer is going to want a 7 month pregnant person who is considered high risk due to pregnancy induced hypertension and all of my weekly NSTs and U/S start next week.

My biggest hurdle that I am having to cross is that while I was with my ex I was very dependent on him, we put him first through school since he had less time and got him the good paying full-time job. But when I made the decision to leave, I told myself I never wanted to have to depend on someone like that again and got myself all set up with my bills to do it on my own. I lived paycheck to paycheck and child support check to the next, but I was working full-time, I'm going to school full-time, my bills were getting paid and I was providing DD with what she needed. Now I just feel like I have completely gone backwards.

If you made it this far, thank you for listening. I can't sleep so I thought I would type it out.

  • That's terrible! While you are searching for a new job are you eligible for unemployment in your state? This is the kind of situation that unemployment was created for.

  • That's awful news I'm so sorry. I really hope this didnt affect your insurance situation. Hopefully SO can figure out how to pic up more hours while you look for something. I'm sure it's going to be hard for a while, but you've already proved you're a strong woman. You can do this, it just sucks you have to.

  • I was laid off at this point in my last pregnancy. I was able to receive unemployment until the day the doc said I couldn't work anymore. I was expected to follow all th  protocols that a nonpregnant displaced worker would. So you will have to set interviews and you will have to be ready, willing, and able. Good luck. I know  how frustrating it is. I've been there.

  • I'm so sorry, hon.  I can't imagine.

For what it's worth, in my office we just hired someone at 7 months pregnant because she was the best candidate for the job. It can and does happen.

    Hugs.

  • I'm so sorry, I'm sure you didn't need this especially now.
  • Oh no! I'm so sorry this happened to you. I agree with many of the PPs that maybe the best idea would be to file for unemployment for now and look for work that could start once baby arrives. ((hugs))

  • I didn't see this addressed by anyone else, but were you the only one laid off? You said your husband works there as well, was he also laid off? Im just curious as to if your pregnancy had anything to do with your company making this decision. Based on your performance evals and time there, is there anyone that "should" have been let go before you? It just always seems questionable to me when companies lay off pregnant women, especially since most companies go out of their way not to even give the appearance of getting rid of the pregnant lady.

  • Thank you all for your replies and advice. I spent the day running around trying to get everything figured out and I am happy with what I have gotten accomplished in a days time.

I was the only one at my location/building laid off. There were two others at different locations that were laid off as well. There is one person that I feel should have been let go before me, but they are married to the boss so I didn't see that happening. My dad wanted me to call a lawyer, but I honestly don't think I am going to get anywhere. I don't really feel that they did anything illegal. Just really sucks because I was already confirmed for my maternity leave and received my papers, plus they were aware that all of my extra appointments were starting for next week for my pregnancy induced hypertension

Oh I'm sorry, I read your first post wrong. I'm glad you don't feel like they did anything illegal. Good luck on your job search! I hope something great comes out of this for you!
