Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Taking new born twins out.

So just found out today we're having twin boys (knew about the twins since week 6 but the boys was found out today) My parents in their excitement went out and bought us car seats. I know most people for newborns have the infant carseats you can take out easily and put into a stroller or shopping cart. My parents though went out and bought convertible car seats which with my bad shoulder are not moving from the car.

I'll be having to take them with me everywhere or getting a sitter (if my friend can't come live with me) since my husband is due to deploy at max 2-3 months after they are due for what we hope is the final time to Afghanistan.

Any tips on how to go about carting them around with me? Please keep in mind I am disabled with a bad neck and shoulder.

Re: Taking new born twins out.

  • I have 2mo old twin boys. We have infant seats for them for convenience but w a bad neck and shoulder, there's prob little chance you'd be able to handle both at once.

The issue you'll have is carrying both of them to your car along with your bag/keys/etc. esp in the early months when they're super floppy. Would you be able to wear one? That way you could wear one and hold one to the car. Where do you park? I have street parking and if you don't bring them both out at once, you have to leave one either in the car or in the house alone. I suppose you could use a stroller for transport also.

Long story short, trips out by yourself are a full blown excursion. It's doable by yourself, but tiring and so much easier w help. It took me a good 6w just to want to leave the house and then a couple times to get my "system" down.

  • Also, most double strollers at behemoths. They're heavy and awkward to haul in and out of a car. Off the top of my head, I can't say which ones are lightest, but I'd be very impressed if there's one less than 25 lbs.

  • Convertible seats are not meant to be taken in and out of the car. Once they're in they're meant to stay in.

If you're disabled you're not going to be able to carry around the two infant seats, anyway. They're not all that small and are bulking and can be a PITA.

Maybe try posting on the multiples board for ideas on how to get around, on your own, that won't aggravate your disability?

  • We have a double stroller that my husbands Sergeant found for free, I don't remember what it is but it's pretty big It's a graco.. which I just tried picking it up and yeah.. not happening. Depending on the type of carrier I could carry a baby on me, but I won't be able to carry a baby car seat.. that arm has a ten pound limit on it right now.

As to parking right now we have a drive way so the car is only a few feet from the door so I wouldn't be that worried about leaving one in the car and one in the house since it's so close. Shortly after they are born we're moving on base so I can't really say, but I think it will be similar just a bigger home which is what we need.

A lot of this in hinging on my friend moving in while my husband is deployed to help me out.
