NWMR: Dance Lessons for Little Girls

Have your kids done dance? I'm curious how much you paid for lessons. I want to sign DD up for dance this year b/c I think she'd really enjoy it, and we're not signing up for anything else this fall. The rec. dept. class times don't work for me (during work), but I figure they average out at about $8/class. The only other real option is a "school of dance" that I figure averages to about $13/lesson (including required clothing). Is this high, low, other? It seems like a lot to me for a 4 year old. On the other hand, the actual ballet school for our city's ballet charges twice that.

  • Dd is also starting dance this fall, she's 3. We are going to a dance school and it is $44/month so $11 a class. I think that's average. I picked the only weeknight class I could find so price wasn't a consideration. We are already doing swim on sat mornings and she is in daycare full time.

  • Thanks! I think I will try to sign her up. It sounds SUPER FORMAL AND STUFFY but I know people like this place.

  • I just signed up my 3 year old for a pre-ballet class.  They call it Creative Dance.  I really searched around and I finally decided to suck it up and pay for an expensive class downtown. The cost for 18 weeks of classes was $275.00 but you had to pay a $50.00 registration fee.  Her leotard, 2 pairs of tights, and 2 pairs of ballet slippers cost about $60.00.  So I spent about $385.00 for everything.  The actually classes were really supposed to be $275 divided by 18 weeks = $15 per class, but with the mandatory fee and mandatory outfits it's really more like $21 per class if you do the math.

We'll see how it goes.  Hopefully it won't be a colossal waste of $.  You never can tell with 3 year olds.

I forgot to add I spent another $75 on clothes, ballet shoes, and tap shoes. And I think $15 registration fee.

  • We paid $60 a month at a dance conservatory/school for classes once a week.  In addition to buying leotards and shoes, we also shelled out a good chunk of change for the recital fee, costumes, professional pictures, and the DVD.
  • DD did dance at 1 1/2 and 2, now gymnastics at 3, both were about $50/ month for usually 4 45 minute classes.  We've done a few things at the YMCA that were cheaper, but we're horribly run.
