Any pregnant dancers here?

Hi Ladies! Just wondering if there are any dancers here? What sorts of things are you limiting in technique classes? I have not been doing any petite or grand allegro in ballet class and I am nervous to do any Graham technique right now. Anyone?

Re: Any pregnant dancers here?

  • Yep, I was expecting this to be an "exotic" dance thread >_<

I am an irish step dancer (former ballet dancer.) We are actually on break for Summer and I am not sure what I'm going to do in two weeks when classes resume. This was a hard fought for pregnancy, and with our losses and twins I am considered high risk so I think I may have to put dancing on hold. I teach as well as take class and perform with our school, but I think I am going to have to take a step back from my own dancing and get help demonstrating in the classes I teach. Irish is high impact and all about jumping and that just doesn't seem like a good idea right now.

I think that stretching and some strength work with be ok (minus abs). What is Graham technique?

  • Thanks ladies, I will have to ask my other friends from college who have already had kids. Good luck to you both!
  • I was wondering the same thing, I am a ballet dancer and jazz teacher as well. All I've heard is "listen to your body" and "follow your instincts" and some stuff about not jumping much? I'm hoping I can continue for awhile at least, as long as I'm careful...
  • I'm a belly dancer, so I've been doing everything still!

I took ballet for several years and never got up to your level, so I wouldn't know what to limit beyond what PP said: listening to your body.

I am a belly dancer too! Yay! LOVE belly dancing. I have danced professionally for about 7 years now but lately I am avoiding all gigs due to my body changing so quickly and feeling so ill!
