Covering umbilical stump?

I got lots of advice to make sure the coming home from hospital outfit wasn't a onesie and wasn't too tight so it wouldn't rub the umbilical cord stump. So I bought a little dress with a cardigan and a diaper cover. For whatever reason (mommy brain I guess), I didn't really think beyond that outfit. 90% of what I have for newborn clothing is a onesie or one piece outfit. For BTDT moms, was this an issue?

Re: Covering umbilical stump?

  • FTM here, but I think the answer will depend on the baby and who you ask. My friends all say onesies worked just fine as long as not too tight, and that pants/elastic waists can actually be more irritating to the stump. But some BTDT moms on this board have shared the opposite experience and recommend against onesies.

We have onesies and side-snap shirts with pants for our LOs. I guess we'll just see what works best for them!

  • I'm a FTM and I've been putting my boy in onesies. Since he is small the newborn size is loose on his tummy, he hasn't been bothered by them. His stump is healing or drying out nicely and doesn't seem irritated or anything.

  • Honestly, when my little guy came home he was mostly naked and swaddled. Well, for a couple he had to be naked and under a light blanket bc of elevated bilirubin, but when he wasn't under the blanket I usually just swaddled him. I though clothes were an unnecessary PITA unless we were going out. When we did go out, he wore one piece zip up outfits.
  • Both of my boys wore onesies and it wasn't an issue for them. I plan on doing the same with this LO. A lot of being a FTM is trial and error, you can try a onesie. As long as it isn't tight, it should be ok.
  • Onesies weren't an issue with either of my kids.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • My DD wore a onesie home from the hospital and consistently thereafter. Her cord stump healed well and fell off within a week or two.

  • Like others said, it varies. My preference for three kids now has been to keep it uncovered for the first few days, then once it's well on its way to being dried out, I don't mind using a onesie for a light layer to keep it from getting bumped. It's partially because I don't *love* putting onesies on a brand new baby as they are scrunched up and often hard to dress.  It's hard enough getting their legs down to put a clean diaper on!
  • I think a onsie would be fine. LO's diaper irritated his umbilical stump more than any clothes could have .. Keeping the diaper away from rubbing it was way harder than worrying about clothes

  • I've been putting DS in onesies except for today I'm sticking to side snap shirts because his stump is literally hanging on by a thread. So I don't want to bother it.

  • I just looked up this question the other day when trying to decide what to bring as something for LO to wear on the way home. I've got a newborn size outfit that's a loose shirt and either bloomers or pants, and a 0-3 months outfit that is a loose-fitting jumper onesie. I may throw in a newborn regular or loose-fit onesie, too. It's not like their clothes take up a lot of room ;)

  • Gerber and Carter's have side snap/kimono style white t-shirts. DS1 and 2 have lived in them, a diaper, and blanket for the first 2 weeks, only getting changed if we're going out. After that onesies and sometimes pants if we're going out or if the weather demanded it.

  • DS wore loose onesies and we didn't have a problem with his cord getting irritated. For this LO I have plenty of onesies and gowns.
  • We used one piece outfits and just made sure they were loose.

  • We used sleepers and onsies from the start. I personally think that a onsie works better than pants or bloomers because those tend to sit right on a baby's belly button.

  • It was still warm or mildly warm out when we brought each of our 4 LOs home before, so I was thinking we didn't use onesies, but not for the reason of the cord stump. Then I thought back to DS4. His going home outfit was a onesie shirt and pants outfit, and he wasn't little, so not a lot of room to spare. It wasn't an issue! I recall folding the top of his diaper down underneath the cord, so maybe that bulk was enough to provide a little protection??
