Newborn questions

I've bought all different brands & types for my OS stash - I plan to try them all and figure out what we like best  (I've bought several brands of pockets, aio's, fitteds, and ai2's). So, I'm good there. It's my newborn stash that I'm trying to sort out.

My newborn stash (so far) consists of: 16 GMD Workhorse Fitteds and 3 Thirsties DUO AIO's in size one that I bought randomly on sale. I also have 2 Kawai P&N's that I've heard conflicting info regarding whether I can use these at birth or not? I didn't buy them for that intent, but it would be a bonus if I could use them from birth.

Question 1: I'm wondering what I need to look for in a good cover for the newborn stage to use with the GMD fitteds - Wipeable, gussets, etc. What's important/convenient? I love to support WAHM's and have found some covers on Etsy that I'd like to try, but I also don't want to be dealing with a constant poo-splosion from a shitty (no pun intended) cover. I know I can easily browse the board to find recommendations for name-brand covers, so I'll do that as well ;)

Question 2: What would you suggest that I purchase for the rest of my newborn stash? I'll admit that I am very drawn to AIO's, especially with velcro/aplix, because of the ease factor...and the fact that our families are totally scared of CD's, so I'd like to get some stuff that is super easy and not intimidating, as family is close and we visit very often for dinner, etc. I've looked at NB Swaddlebees, but I'm turned off by the cost (this coming from the girl who just bought THE most adorable Twinkie Tush) because I feel like she will be in them for such a short time. Maybe I should just stick with the GMD's and pick up some more of those?

As always, thanks for the help/info!

Re: Newborn questions

  • I had almost every brand of nb dipe with my son. I found that my favorites were Lil Joey's until about 1 month in and the Swaddlebee Simplex NB. Other than those my favorite covers are Thirsties. I also love me some prefolds in the beginning. My next baby I'll probably just do prefolds, a few fitteds, and a handful of AIO's. GL

  • Kawaii P&N fit from the beginning for DD (born 7 lb 6 oz).
I've got Bummis super whisper wraps and Thirsties duos for covers. Both are fine, and I haven't had too many issues with leaks.
I'd get a dozen prefolds, about 4-6 covers, and some more Kawaii (both the P&N and the Little Green Bamboo are great). I've got 5 pockets and a ton of fitteds and prefolds. It's working well.
  • We use Thirsties covers, size xsmall or duo size 1. I think the double gussets are super important for newborn poos. I had a Swaddlebees AIO from a diaper trial service, but didn't like it. For us, it wasn't reliable to hold the poos.

We also have 2 Kawaii P&N, they are pretty reliable for holding poos, but they are a little tighter than I like on my guy's thighs. They fit pretty much from birth 7lb 8oz.
  • BG NB AIOs were what we used almost exclusively. I had prefolds and covers but they were too bulky for me. My favorite cover was thirsties size 1. The xs was too bulky and bigger than the smallest setting on the size 1.

Aplix is necessary for the NB stage!

  • My son is only 2.5 weeks old and we've only been using cloth part time but so far my favorite cover is our Blueberry mini coverall. I have a Thirsties Duo size 1 and Rumparooz NB cover as well but the Mini coverall fits the best and has been reusable most often out of my three.

I have been very happy with both our Kawaii P&N and Swaddlebee's Simplex NB. The Simplex fit him from birth ( 7 lb 3 oz) but we waited until his cord fell off to start using the Kawaii.
  • I'd recommend getting some Lil Joeys and Tot Bots Tiny Fits if you're looking for AIOs. Those are what fit my DD the best at 6lbs 6oz, as well as the Thirsties that you already have.

  • We tried several different AIO/pockets during the NB stage.  LO outgrew the absorbency of Lil Joey's way too quickly, so we didn't like those AIOs.  I really loved the Simplex AIOs - they are pricier, but they fit for a really long time!  LO has outgrown all his other NB dipes, but those still fit (he's 13lbs 13oz).

I'd say go for prefolds and covers.  They might seem intimidating, but they're wonderful.  DH was really skeptical at first, but even he was impressed with how easy they were, and loved showing it off to family.

For covers, we had a Bummis Super Snap which was nice for newborn, as well as Thirsties Duo Size 1.  The Thirsties is still going strong, and the double gussets are really wonderful.  We didn't have problems with blowouts with the super snap though, despite not being double gusseted.

I did all snaps, as I knew I wanted our OS stash to be snaps, and I didn't want to spoil DH into thinking aplix was the norm ;-)  I haven't had any issue with it.

  • I have a handful of AIOs in my stash, BUT the majority of the stash is going to be fitteds and prefolds.  The AIOs are literally to ease my H into it and for when I'm out and about.

This. go with prefolds or fitteds and covers for the newborn stage.  if you're more focused on cost (which we were) pro-wraps are great covers and super cheap.  they're just not that cute; i only found solid white.  thirsties are great, too...very dependable and reasonably priced.  the double gussets were important to us, too, b/c our LO has skinny legs.

we have mostly nb fitteds w/o snaps from gmd and find that this allows us to get a better fit with a snappi and we can use them for longer.
