Pregnant after 35

Glucose Tolerance Test

I'm am 27 weeks pregnant with baby girl number three. My glucose test came back high on Friday so I had to do a three hour tolerance test today. I got very sick from it. I felt nauseous and light headed. They gave me a room to lye down. It took all I could not to through up. I'm nervous about my results and what it will mean if I fail this one. Anyone else go thur this test? What should I expect next if I fail?

Re: Glucose Tolerance Test

  • From my experience if you fail they may want to refer you to a nutritionist or specialist to help you learn how to manage your blood sugar through diet. They'll most likely want you to get a blood glucose monitor and start testing your blood a few times a day.
The tests really are awful between the taste of the drink and the side effects. Good luck!

  • They may ask you to see an Endocrinologist, and probably you'll just monitor and watch your diet carefully. I fail them due to reactive hypoglycemia, my body reacts badly to a large influx of sugar by over creating insulin, which then sends me into a low sugar shock which is miserable and a lot like you described. I get very emotional too and irrational. This happens when I am not pregnant too, though, my whole life I've had problems with it. I see an Endocrinologist regularly anyway because of low thyroid, but when I failed the glucose tolerance due to hypoglycemia, they did have me see my Endo about tweaking my diet to avoid issues with sudden blood sugar drops. I would imagine that you'd start with a similar plan for high blood sugar fails since the treatments are usually pretty similar for reactive hypoglycemia and diabetes. Try not to stress about it. They'll work on it with you and get it under control/monitored and they'll start with the most minor treatments first, so no worries! Good luck!

  • I have had GD with my 2nd, 3rd and 4th pregnancies - at first it seems horrible, but then you realize that it does force you to eat much healthier which is only a positive for you and your baby.  AND it goes away after delivery, so it's a short term inconvenience.  If you fail, you will meet with a nutritionist and learn about GD and how to individually monitor your levels with a meal plan set for you.  You will be checking your blood sugars about 4 times per day - again, seems awful at first, but with 2 kids already, you know all about sacrifice, inconvenience and a little pain here and there.  On most pregnancy boards, there are support groups just for those with GD, too.  Hang in there, you'll get through it!

  • I took the test twice and couldn't hold the stuff down either time. They gave me a script for a Glucometer and want me to follow a low-carb/sugar diet. I don't think it'll be too bad. Good luck!
  • I have also had GD. I was really upset at first as we had some insensitive diabetic educators who told us there was a chance the baby would die after birth, but they neglected to tell us that it would only happen if I didn't control my GD (which I did with a very strict diet) and if they didn't check the baby's sugar levels after birth. So basically, as long as you deal with it with diet or insulin and the doctors are aware, you will be fine.
Oh also I was induced on my due date as my pregnancy was "high risk" and my little boy was fine and his sugars levels were perfect after birth.
