NWMR Baking Question

Is using fondant hard? I'm thinking about making this pig cake for DS's Angry Birds party.

Re: NWMR Baking Question

  • It's not the easiest thing in the world. More importantly, it tastes like crap. People will just peel off the fondant and throw it away.

My mom is a professional cake decorator, and refuses to use fondant because of the effort involved and the fact that if you're using fondant, it's more for decoration than eating.

You can easily do a buttercream cake using a star tip that will like cute and still taste good. The star tip is super easy to work with and really forgiving with mistakes. I couldn't find the pig specifically and am too lazy to search hard, but here's an example:

  • While I will agree that it isn't for taste, it is pretty easy to use.  I would buy the premade at a craft store and find a good online how to video.  I took a beginner cake decorating class and we had a lesson on fondant and I found it pretty forgiving if you take your time.
To make the cake taste better you can put buttercream or another yummy filler under the fondant.
  • I second the star tip. Super easy and turns out great! You can even buy the pre-made frosting in the can with the tip already attached. I had to turn to that for DS's spiderman cake because I couldn't get the color of the frosting right and had to throw out an entire batch so I never even got to use my fancy cake decorator that I bought. I still had people at the party that didn't believe I made the cake and it was very little effort to decorate with the star tip.
  • If i were going to make that cake i would frost it green, make a small bunt shape cake for the nose, use oreo cookie halves, mini oreos, and liquorish for the decorations, probably a watermelon gummy for the mouth
