Milk

Do you warm milk up for your LO in bottles like you did with formula? We just came off formula and went to 2%. He keeps taking breaks while drinking it but he still wants it (which makes me think its too cold). But I am afraid it could cause bacteria. TIA

Re: Milk

  • I never warme bottles. Right now I mix formula and milk to get her used to WCM and the cooler temp.

We don't, but warming milk won't cause bacteria.

At night I mix the cold milk with some warm or lukewarm formula.

  • Yes, we still are.  Only because she got really dependent on having a warm bottle, and we're transitioning in steps.  So first I'm transitioning from warm formula in bottle to warm WCM in bottle, then to cold WCM in bottle, then to cold WCM in sippy.  It would be too much change for her all at once otherwise.  I hope to have her on cold WCM in sippy by the time she's 13 months.

I treat warmed WCM the same way I would warmed formula, following the same rules for refrigeration within the hour and reheating only once.
  • It depends if you can get your baby adjusted to cold, but warming it for a few mins in hot water won't hurt.. That's what we do in the infant room at my Center!

I slowly cooled the temp with DS to get him used to the cold milk. I use our tap water, we have a 1000 micron while house filter plus the smallest fridge filter you can get, and our fridge water is as cold as milk. He did really well with the gradual change. Now we are working on transistioning to sippy.

  • I don't have an answer because I'm reading because we are FAILING on the milk transition (and the cup - she'll drink water cold, warm, upside down, sideways in a cup - the minute she hears or tastes that its milk/ formula warm / cold, etc she will not even LOOK at it)

May I ask why you are doing 2%?

  • Neither of my DS liked milk. I was lucky to get 6oz a day in them. We just made sure they got healthy fats from other soures. Once they got older (like 3-4) and we switched to 1% or slim, they love it. Hoping DD will at least take 2% for awhile.

  • Nope, we give them to her cold. But I did with formula/bm bottles too.
