Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Taking Turns/Sharing Toys

This morning at daycare drop off, I watched DS (17 months) walk up to this little toy zebra that the kids can ride and push the little boy who was on it right off so he (DS) could get on.  I almost died. I was mortified.  I immediately went over and said, "no, Jacob was riding that. It's his turn now. You'll get your turn later."  The teacher assured me that the kids (around DS's age) do this to each other all the time and not to be upset about it. But, still, I felt so horrible.

What is the age that kids really "get" sharing and taking turns? Should my DS know this by now???

Re: Taking Turns/Sharing Toys

  • My LO takes toys all the time from her playmate who's a few months older. I always feel bad but to be fair I feel bad more because I wonder what the other parent is thinking, I know it's normal so I hate to "No" her just to show the parent I did something. I generally just distract her with something else and give the original toy back to the boy saying, "Max had that, try this." I will say even in the last month though I've seen some progress. At home she always hands stuff to us to share. However, with her playmate still no luck...I think in that case though it's like he brings toys that are new to her so she naturally is more curious. I think it's just early, don't stress.

  • It's no big deal.  Until they can ask for a turn and use words taking turns is tough.  They're also still in parallel play mode - they don't start really playing together until after 2.

  • Thanks everyone! I appreciate the reassurances that this behavior is fairly typical.  We'll keep working on it since there will likely be many more teachable moments! :-)
