Interior Designer here. Do not go to Target. You have a boy, it's not going to hold up.
I suggest if money is an issue, going to a furniture store, but look at their bargain room. Almost every larger furniture store has a dent and ding or discontinued room. You can also find nice mis-matched mattresses and box springs for a better price. This is the first place I go every time. You'd be surprised what you find.
If money is not an issue - I say still a furniture store. There are more an better quality options there and will hold up better thru his rough and tumble years - and maybe even something that will work thru his teen.
Shop around for the mattresses. I think the biggest sale season is over, but if you ask nicely, you might be able to still get a Labor Day sale deal.
October by the way is the best time to shop for furniture - this is when the stores are bringing in new lines and new products, and weeding out older models.
