whopping cough outbreaks? UPDATE

the local news is reporting a whopping cough outbreak here and my friend in SC is saying they are in a midst of one as well... anywhere else experiencing that outbreak?

We kind of went into a rant about my boss and his questionable decision not to vaccinate...

I asked him today about the whopping cough break out... and the fact that his daughter does go to an in home daycare where there are 5 other kids... He just shrugged it off and said that he wasn't concerned about it and that I needed to butt out of his family choices. His wife came in and was asking me about vaccinations and I told her that I thought it was a bad idea not to vaccinate and she agreed but he didn't want to so she was going with him on it... I MEAN REALLY?!?!?!

not that i know of yet, but give it a couple months. colder weather always brings outbreaks in the San Francisco/Bay area that spread out our way.

it's just high levels, Dallas news is reporting the highest numbers in 50 years..... worrisome.

I have DS vaccinated, and Dh and I were both vaccinated as well, but that's kinda insane.

We had an outbreak last year in Kansas City.

It was around the same time my LO had to get tested for whooping cough. He was sick, and would cough until he threw up. (I spent the week in my underwear and him in a diaper, hold him while he puked on me, then hose both of us off in the shower. Rinse and repeat. No pun intended. Had to have our couch professionally shampooed after that because it had so much baby puke on it.) He had only had 1 shot for it at the time because of his age, about 3 months old, it was my first week back from maternity leave and I had to take a few days off to stay home with him.

Luckily the test came back NEGATIVE! But OMG, I was choking back tears when they were doing the test; they stick like a little rock on a wire up their nose and hold if for a certain amount of time. There were 2 nurses holding him down, and 2 more nurses sticking the wires up his nose. He screamed bloody murder the entire time, can't say I blamed him, it looked painful!

And I was SOOOO PISSSSSSED when they had to test him for it. I work at a children's hospital, and we had just ran a story about the whooping cough outbreak because parents weren't vaccinating their kids. Then when he got sick and we were waiting for the official test results to see if it was whooping cough or not, I just wanted to punch everyone that didn't get their kid vaccinated, all I could think was "your stupidness made my kid sick!".

That sounds awful. Poor littli one, I was would have lost it, I cry everytime they give my sone shots... couldn't imagine having extra done to him.

I got in an argument with my boss yesterday (he's a Chiropractor) who is NOT vaccinating his daughter. I'm quite terrified for them.... WHY DO PEOPLE NOT VACCINATE? He told me I was risking my son's health with vaccinations, I was favoring him to have autism. I was furious. I finally told him, I wasn't risking anything, HE was risking his daughters well being. Buhhumbug.

I'm actually ready to go in today and point out what the news was reporting today... dumb.

Totally agree... My sister in law is special needs... I would not have any resercation about raising an autistic son versus not having him at all.

My BIL is a chiropractor too and his kids (from a previous marriage) are not vaccinated. It pisses me off so bad. They thought I was being a b**** when I refused to let their kids see Addie until she was vaccinated. Really? I am not going to risk my child because of your negligence!

I have only been familiar with Chiro care since I started working for him about a year ago, before that I didn't know much about it...

A kid in my nephew's class got it last year. I was terrified. I have not had enough sleep to appropriately process the rage that discussions like this induce in me. I might say something offensive and be run off the board. I'll leave it at that. Vaccinate people!

Maybe because they aren't doctors but think they know better than doctors? Maybe because they were slighted for med school after their MCATs came back too low so they just have to be bitter?

Short of his vaccination choice, I respect the man... He did 5 years of college then 4 years of Chiro school after that... That's a lot of schooling just to become a professional back cracker... He wanted to be a Chiro before he started college, so I commend him for doing what he wants.

But yes, the vaccination issue is a huge downfall... but as far as I know that's the only time I've felt like he [thinks] he knows better than an MD....
