3rd Trimester

Braxton Hicks or Real Contractions

I want to know what everyone's opinion is on the difference. I am currently 37 wks 3 days pregnant. This is my second, my son is 8 years old so it has been quite some time. I am not sure if what I am feeling is even braxton hicks, the doc explained it to me but I am sure with everyone its different. My belly gets really hard and tight which makes it really uncomfortable for me to even move. It is happening more frequently and now they are starting to become painful. Also the past 2 days I have had a lot of pressure in my butt area and alittle of back pain. I have been dealing with a lot of pain and pressure down there for a while now because we have another big baby on our hands. But I just wanted to know how the heck do you tell the difference if there is even a difference.

Re: Braxton Hicks or Real Contractions

  • Hard to say. Could just be BH with the baby moving down and engaging more. Bring it up at your next appt or if they get timeable head in to L&D to get checked out.

  • I just want to add I don't think I am in labor or early labor. I just wanted to know how it was for everyone. I have read up on it and talked to the doc but am not sure what I am feeling is even braxton hicks or contractions before anyone gangs up on me for posting this. :)

I have my 37 week appt tomorrow so I will talk to them about it. I know he is head down and that is causing a lot of pressure because I have been leaking urine for the last month and a half.

  • BH are real contractions.

They just call them something different because they are for practice and shouldn't be dialating your cervix. They can be painful for some woman. Usually BH do not get closer together like true labor does.

Kind of sounds like they are BH, but it could turn into true labor contractions as well.

  • All I can really say is that for me BH were extremely different than real contractions.
  • If they are BH contractions they will go away if you change your position, or drink water and rest.
  • My OB basically explained it like BH are still contractions but they don't lead to active labor. I have had BH that were painful as well as some that I never even felt. Contractions that lead to labor are probably going to be different but like PP said, if changing position, resting, and drinking water don't make them go away then start timing them.
  • I think i'm experiencing a lot of the bh. it's similar to what you're describing my belly gets super hard and I feel like the baby is going to fall out of me!! there's not pain per say but so much pressure and it feels uncomfortable to me. It increases mainly when I do my 2 mile walk. I put on my maternity belt and that helped me feel a lot better. I don't think i'm in labor at all but I think i'm getting ready and within next 2 weeks or so she'll be here. good luck
  • I had an appointment yesterday and I am 35 weeks. When the doctor asks you if you have had any contractions how do you answer? Sorry I maybe should start a different post for this but it's kinda a similar question/topic. I told her no, assuming she meant real ones but of course I have had BH ones that just go away with changing my position. Most of the time they happen when I adjust while sleeping. I wake up and roll to my other side and it goes away. And then last night I had the most painful "contraction" I have yet experienced. I know there have been some pp that have said that BH's are real contractions but was last nights a real contraction? I for sure haven't had timeable anything but it just hurt so much more than normal. So, guess I'm wondering the same thing. Difference between BH and contractions?

My 37 week appt was last monday and my doc asked me the same thing...I assume she wanted to know about anything I've felt, even BH. They are important for getting the cervix ready for labor. I am noticing that while they aren't regular, the last week or so I have been getting them every day for a few hours at a time. Sometimes they are pretty painful but I have done some reading and it seems like the big thing is if they come at regular intervals (like 10 min apart) and get longer/stronger. If they do these things, it's a huge heads up, and when they get 5 min apart, time to go to the hospital!
