What type of Doctor does your LO see?

I am curious. It seems most people on the bump take their LO to a pedi. I live in canada and as far as I know people don't really see Pedi's although I imagine we probably have them.

My LO sees my family Dr who also happened to be my OB. I do like her a lot and have been seeing her since I was young but I feel like she doesn't always know everything.. which is understandable because she is expected to know alot but I want my baby to get the best care. There were times when I was young that I was sick for an extended period of time because she was not diagnosing me correctly. I wonder if a pedi could have done better..

  • I prefer LO to be seen on base, and the pedi offices were all full when we tranferred our healthcare to this base. I'm just lucky there was a doctor available on base at all.

DD did go to a pedi for her 2 month appointment, but the military insurance switched her to the family doctor that DS and I see when a space opened up (because that was my original request). The pedi office at the military hospital had soooo many patients and she would be getting seen by a resident, not a pediatrician who'd been in practice for awhile, so I decided to just stick with the family practice doctor.

I took DS to a pediatrician at our last base, but wasn't satisfied with the care he received. If I could pick any pedi, I'd go that route, but that's not how it works for us.

  • I live in Canada, too. We see a family doctor who was also my OB. We have a Pedi at the clinic I go to and for certain cases people are referred to him. We saw him for DD's umbilical granuloma.
  • Our pedi is a DO not MD

  • We see a pedi but Ty will be circumcised by a pediatric urologist due to his twisted frenulum...I will be begging for t&ps when that happens :)

  • I'm in Canada and DD sees a pedi. DH and i both went to pedis growing up. I wonder if it more a city vs rural thing because a friend of mine who lived in a more rural area said she saw a family doc growing up.

  • I second the a baby is not a small adult comment. Actually, a baby isn't a small child either. The water/fat composition is different, so the way medications react differ among age groups (for example, Ritalin is a stimulant in adults but is used to calm kids down with ADHD). Even as a pedi who by definition specializes only in children, if anything abnormal is found, the child gets referred to a specialist. Medicine is too comprehensive to know it all. To me, and I mean no disrespect, a family doctor is "a jack of all trades but a master of none."

That could be since I am in a rural area. I did some research and it seems there are pedis about 45 minutes away but you need a referral. There is a pedi walk in though so I will have to keep that in mind

  • I voted both because our doc is, well, both. He is an MD in internal medicine and pediatrics. He has been DH's family doctor for years.

  • There are few pediatricians nearby. The one I saw I will be switching because I felt it was substandard care. That and he is an older dr going to be retiring soon. I just wish all the drs didn't have thick accents, it's hard for me to understand some accents :(
  • DH,DS1, DS2, and I all see the same FP. I love that she checks in about all of us no matter who has the appt.

I know some people swear by a family doctor but to me, a child is a specialty.  I would see a cardiologist for a heart problem and a neuro for a brain problem.  Kids aren't small adults.  Like you said, a family doctor can be great but I personally think it's impossible for them to remain up to date on things for all age groups.  I like that my pedi's one job is to remain current on common and less common childhood illnesses, feeding, development, milestones, safety, etc.

    Edited for words :-p
I was going to come on here and say something like this, but she already said it for me. I totally agree, which is why my LO sees a pediatrician.
