Food Question

I've been giving DS homemade purees for a few weeks now. Last week was sweet potato, which he acted like he loved but gagged. Now this week is green beans and he's gagging again. Does he not like the foods or is he not ready to keep eating solids? I'm varying bite size to see if it's because the bites are too big, but big or small, it doesn't matter. I've also changed the consistency with formula.

Any other gagging experience?

THANKS!

Re: Food Question

  • I know it's an obvious question, but are you sure they're cooked through? I noticed with vegetables if they were under cooked the purée has a weird texture and LO doesn't like them or there are sometimes pieces in it that won't purée and since he can't really chew them he spits them out.
  • Loading the player...
  • My Lo gags sometimes if I give him another bite to soon. He doesnf do it often though.
  • Well I cook them according to the wholesomebabyfood.momtastic website. They seem cooked and puree well. I could attempt to cook the next batch longer.

And I thought it could be because I was going too fast, but I even took a few breaks and he still gagged.

    I'm at a loss.
  • We haven't started solids yet, but plan on blw. From what I read, gagging is normal, and means they're not choking. So I guess I wouldn't worry. They're just learning.
  • Even if it's causing him to throw up sometimes? And at almost every bite causing a gag, it doesn't seem "worth it" but I know he's ready and wanting to eat.

That does seem excessive.... Maybe He has a hyperactive gag reflex? And bringmitnup to your pedi? I think the gag reflex is supposed to move farther back as they get older, so maybe it is jut going to take some time? I don't know. Sorry I'mmnot much help.
  • Sorry for all the typos... Mobile bumping! I do know how to spell.
  • Yeah his next Pedi appt. is 9/12 so I will ask. But keep trying in the meantime to see if he gets used to it. Thank you :)
  • Yes, from what I've read it's also normal, and the reflex moves back as they get older, so maybe he is just not quite ready yet.  As long as he isn't choking (ie not breathing) then supposedly it is fine.  We haven't started solids yet so I don't have experience, just what I've read in the BLW book. :)  I would definitely talk to the pedi, and keep trying but take it slow.  Are you spoon feeding?  I assume you are if you are using purees...That could be causing it too, that puts the food further back in their mouth.

  • Okay I may just wait for a little while then. Give him a week or so break and try again .. his bottles are still satisfying his hunger very well.
It's just strange that his first week went so well, then two weeks of gagging lol
But I'm in NO rush!!! It's a very messy experience feeding him!
  • This is normal, gagging and even to the point of throwing up.  When I researched BLW, there is talk about gagging, but very few people mention that this can cause our LO's to throw up, which is normal.  This is part of the process in learning how to chew and swallow.  A true choking baby will not make any sound.  When they say BLW is messy, they don't just mean the mess from the baby feeding themselves!
That's really good to hear. Thank you! It's strange to think that he's still gagging on such little bites of puree but I know it's all new to him.

BTW, your summer fail pic is hilarious.
  • Are you giving him a lot on the spoon? Mine gags not as much it it seems that's its only when I give too much.

I thought the same, so I gave smaller bites and he still gagged. I tried bites of all sizes, waiting a minute or two between bites, etc. So we're just holding off for a bit.
