Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Waking up really early

LO is 22 months.  She goes to sleep really well and sleeps through the night great.  But lately she wakes up at 5AM (sometimes earlier) crying and yelling.  She gets really mad and wants to get out.  It seems like she is hungry and keeps asking to eat.  She drinks about 6-7 oz of milk before bed.  She has always eaten a lot in the mornings and it is hard to get her to eat at dinner time.  Also she is teething and that may be waking her up too.  Any ideas to keep her sleeping just a little bit longer?  Thanks!

  • Does she have any solids right before sleep? Maybe give her a biscuit or something that's not too messy and quick just to add substance to her milk. Another idea would be half wake her up before you go to bed to give her a few more ounces of milk then put her back down.

  • So my guy is 23 months and has been an early riser probably since April?  (it seems like forever, but I haven't been keeping track).  We still haven't figured out a way to get him to sleep later.

Within the past month however, he's been similarly waking up screaming/crying, sounding really scared.  I've talked to my friends with older kids (2-2.5) and their kids went through this too, so I think it's developmental.  Personally, I think it's a form of night terrors - even though it doesn't match the description.  Something about bad dreams.
