Flu Shot @ 6 month appt

Is there anyone not giving their LO the flu shot at his/her 6 month appt?
It of course is recommended, but my LO is home during the day vs a daycare center so was curious if anyone else in same boat and not getting it.
I know they can catch the flu at home or other places then daycare but just was curious on the schools of thought here.  Right now, my LO will be getting it, unless there is something i overlooked.

  • I'm going to discuss it with our pedi, but as of right now I also plan on having LO get it at her 6 month appt or schedule a separate appt for it to spread everything out a bit.

  • yes - i think my Ped. said he would get flu shot and drop one of the other 6 mo vaccines and get it when he comes back for flu booster a few weeks later.

  • Mine will be getting it. I don't want to risk her getting it because the flu can be much worse (even fatal) for little ones. I also never for it before pregnancy but I will also be getting it again this year to protect LO.

We are all getting flu shots ASAP.

Also, for those of your with other little ones - check with your pediatrician. I know ours will let Charlie get his shot when I take Ginny in for her appointment, even though its not his appointment. Save yourself a trip.

  • We'll get hers as soon as we can (small town so we have special dates for flu clinics, I might not be able to get them at the same time as her appointment, depends on availability). Big brother will get his at the same time. He still goes to daycare twice a week so I want her protected even though she's home with me. I'll probably get DH to take the day off and come get his too, otherwise it won't happen!

  • Thank you for the reminder. This somehow slipped my mind, but I will definitely be asking at his 6 month appointment (if not sooner, since that appointment won't be until towards the end of October). But he will definitely be getting it, as will the whole family.
  • As soon as possible.  I don't know why I wouldn't get it for him (and for us!)

I didn't realize flu shots were so universally recommended. I've never had one, not even when I was pregnant. Neither has DH. If the pediatrician really strongly recommends it, we might get one for DD, but I grew up with the impression that flu shots are optional and not part of the vaccination schedule.
EDIT: Argh, forgot to add that I'm a SAHM, she's an only child, and I exclusively breastfeed, so considering how rarely I leave the house, she'd be hard-pressed to catch the flu in the first place.

So are you a hermit? Do you get your groceries delivered? Never go out to eat? Or touch public doorknobs? I am a sahm who breastfeeds and I still want my kids to be protected from germs.
Kind of, no, can't afford to, and I avoid it as much as possible because I have mental hangups about it. I want my daughter to be protected from germs, too, but I don't want her to end up like me where I have to wash my hands if I touch a library book. /shrug
If the pediatrician says it's a necessary vaccination, I'll probably do it, but like I said, I was under the impression that flu shots are optional and not part of the recommended vaccination schedule. They're not on the yellow card. OP asked if anyone wasn't going to get the flu shot for her kid, and I answered honestly--as of right now, it's not high on the priority list.

  • Honesty is rare on the internet.

As for the OP, I think WV has a shortage of flu shots last I've heard... just like they have had shortages of other types of shots that I think are way more important. So, when the time comes I honestly do not know if we will even get them. I know elderly and infants are first in line, but tell that to the people when the time actually comes.

  • Ds and dh didn't get the shot last year and were so sick for 2 almost weeks. I got a flu shot because i was pregnsnt and was fine. We don't usually get them (ds has most years), but after that i feel we really need to do it this year.

your husband could bring it home?  I'm in same boat, except if we go to mall, supermarket he'd technically be at risk. As well as my DH catching it and exposing us.

  • I think the recommendation for the flu shot for infants is relatively recent (like last couple years), isn't it? I can see where bibliophilemily is coming from in that the vaccine has become a much bigger deal in recent years with more serious flu outbreaks. She didn't say she isn't getting it - just that she will follow doctor's recommendations. Flu can land a baby in the hospital though, so worthwhile vaccine to get IMHO.

I never got it until I was pregnant. Now DH and I will get them more to protect the kids than us. Both kids will get them too, per pedi's recommended schedule.

  • We're getting them! We will split them though...M didn't react well to all shots at once. I had the flu two winters ago for THREE months. It was awful. I got the flu shot while pregnant and had a mild cold for about 4 days this past winter.

  • Here's the thing -  You are contagious with the flu for a couple days before you start experiencing symptoms.  Therefore, you can pass it on to elderly, babies, and immunocompromised people without even knowing it.  The flu is not a benign entity for these populations.  I went up to the ICU last year during flu season and half the patients there were positive for influenza.  I am mandated to get the flu shot but I would get it anyway.  I don't look at it as protection for myself -- I look at it as protection for those who can't protect themselves.

I will absolutely be getting one for my daughter.  I've seen a lot of very very ill babies because of the influenza virus.  It seems outrageous to take this risk.
