What are you doing with grapes these days?

I cut them at least into quarters if it's a smaller grape, but usually eighths for medium or larger grapes. My 8 month old nephew eats them just cut in half, which makes me think i may be being overly cautious in how small im making the pieces. How do you serve them to lo?

Re: What are you doing with grapes these days?

  • I cut the larger ones into fourths, smaller ones in half. DS is pretty good at chewing nowadays.

  • Quarters or eighths here, too.

I still cut most of my 3-year-old's grapes in quarters as well. I thought I read somewhere to quarter them until kids were 4, but maybe I am being over-cautious there.

DH's gma gave DS a whole grape a couple of months ago, which really freaked me out.

  • With DS1 at this age I was peeling them and quartering them.  I was very cautious.  Now with DS2 I never peel them and I just cut them in half.  Hes never choked.

  • Plus, I think someone here (Baker maybe?) knew an adult who almost died choking on a grape, which added to my determination to cut them small for the kids.

This is what I do. Sometimes I even peel them too.

That was me. It was this guy I nannied for.

I get champagne grapes. They're tiny and don't need cutting. Otherwise, it's 8ths or quarters for small ones.

  • I still quarter my 2.5 year old's grapes. If one of those suckers gets lodged in their airway, getting it out is a crapshoot. Not worth the risk IMO.

  • What about blueberries? I quarter my grapes, but I have still been breaking his blueberries in half. It seems silly to me, especially considering the pieces of chicken he handles with no problem....but I fell like I am goin to break them in half until he is 5.

  • I still cut them into quarters but eighths for the larger ones. I haven't given her blueberries yet because I am too paranoid and have no patience to cut those in half.

I'm with you. I cut them in half. I was peeling them too, up until about a month ago.

Me too. I never peeled them either. Actually not too much of W's food is cut into bite size pieces. I just give whatever whole, and he bites off what he wants. If it's too big for him to chew and swallow, he spits it out.

  • we haven't tried them with DD yet.  i'm not a huge grape fan.  Juice sure, grapes by themselves not as much. i'll probably at least half them when I do try them though.

  • I think I might soil myself out of nervousness the first time I ever give T a grape.

  • DD loves grapes! I cut them in quarters mostly or eighths sometimes if it's large. I'm afraid of choking but she does great with them.

  • At least quarters here. They have a rough skin that's pretty easy to choke on.
  • Im a chicken, I haven't tried grapes yet. I'm also paranoid about choking. I figure there is plenty of time for grapes when she's older. Lol

Ditto. I still cut them in half for my 2.5 year old.

DCFS has you cut them until they're in kindergarten in childcare and preschool centers. Those and hotdogs are ranked really high as choking hazards.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I only cut grapes in half. We did baby led weaning, though, so he will spit out something if it's too big or he can't handle it. He has 8 teeth in front. Blueberries I give whole because they're soft.
  • My mom peeled my grapes for me for so long, that I can't even eat them with skin now. I'm a freak. @-)

And yes, they can very easily get lodged. Even though J chews very well, I'm afraid he could accidentally swallow a big piece of food.
  • I do the same as you, quarters or eighths. Choking is one of my biggest fears though, so I'm being extra cautious.

This is us. I still have a tendency of choking and LO got the trait from me. We are extra cautious.
  • Another LO who's never had a grape here. I was excited to find some champagne grapes at my local store and for 0.2 seconds I was all "praise ye Bump for glorious new food ideas" but then as I reached, I saw they were swarming with tiny fruit flies. Meijer fail. Maybe next time.

  • It depends how big they are. If they are mid-sized grapes, I will just cut them in half.

  • One of the best laughs I ever had was when my sister was cramming as many grapes in her mouth at one time as she could one afternoon after school. We were in middle school. She didn't choke so it's still funny, but I might not think so if DD ever tried it!

DS has been eating whole grapes probably since he turned 2?  Not sure - he's 2.5 and it's been a while now.

  • I just give her whole grapes, we don't peel, cut or anything. She has never choked on anything, not to say that she won't but she has been eating solids since 6 months like a champ.
