OB says I don't need to see the MFM anymore

I'm 23 wks and I've seen the MFM at 13 weeks, 19 weeks and have an appt tomorrow.  I saw the OB today and he said there is absolutely no reason to see them anymore since he will be doing the ultrasounds from here on out.

I know a lot of you see both doctors regularly.  If it makes a different, my twins are di/di, so I know the risk factor is lower.  I've been really not liking my ob anyway and so I am a little peeved that he doesn't want me seeing the MFM anymore (I love them).  Should I be concerned?  Or just let him do his thing?  For those that see both doctors regularly, do you get ultrasounds from both or does the MFM primarily handle that?

TIA!

Re: OB says I don't need to see the MFM anymore

  • I'm having di/di and I see both. My OB is pretty much just like I was having a singleton except they listen for 2 heartbeats and my MFM does an u/s at very appointment. If my OB did an u/s regularly, I'd be fine with seeing just them.

  • I just get ultrasounds from the MFM.  My OB does do ultrasounds in his office, but mainly just to confirm heartbeats, get a quick peak at the babies, etc.  He has older equipment that isn't used for measurements, and for any "official" ultrasounds, I go to specialty ultrasound place or travel to our MFM in a different town.

I guess I'd call your MFM office and ask their opinion, explaining your nervousness.  I personally wouldn't be comfortable, but that's because I'm much more confident in my MFM's twin experience and I'm also having mo-di twins.  My OB is nice, but doesn't see a lot of twins (there aren't a lot of OB options locally).  I have a cousin with di-di twins that primarily saw her OB, who specialized in twin pregnancies, and she was very comfortable with that.

  • If you aren't happy about it you should make a change.
I saw my OB and MFM alternating because that was standard practice (even for di/di twins).  But I really trusted my OB, and they were high risk OBs who saw lots of twins, so I would have been fine with seeing just them for all the appointments and only going to the MFM if there had been an issue. In my case the OB did just hearbeat checks (only utlrasound if they couldnt find both) and manual cervix checks up to 32 weeks, and the MFM tech did ultrasounds.  I would have been fine with my OB doing the detailed ultrasound measurements and then referring me if anything started measuring funny.
But if I wasn't I would have for sure been advocating to see both.
  • Does your MFM deliver?  I only see an MFM exclusively. I would not be comfortable only seeing an OB at the point in the pregnancy you are - especially one who you do not like.  I would speak about it with the MFM and tell her your concerns.  It is up to her to "release" you not your OB.  The fact that he thinks that is his call makes me concerned.  Perhaps your MFM can refer you to an OB who she works with and who you will like better.

Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
  • I see my OB weekly (cervical issues) and my MFM every 4 weeks or so. Also, di/di.  I had to push to see MFM because my OB didn't really think it was necessary at first.  I saw MFM at 21 weeks, will see her again at 25, and then not again until 32.  I think your main issue is that you don't like your OB.  As PP said, call MFM.  Speak to them about your feelings, find out if they deliver, etc.

  • Thanks everyone!  I'll be sure to talk to my MFM at my appointment today.  I don't think they deliver, but it doesn't hurt to ask.  :)

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy for thinking this way before I expressed my concerns.

  • Good luck today. I think it's a good idea to talk to the MFM about it and see if there is any reason they want to continue seeing you. I have a complication-free di/di pregnancy and I've seen the MFM every month (starting with the anatomy scan at 21 weeks) because he does ultrasounds. My OB doesn't have the fancier equipment. If she did, then I would be fine just seeing her, but I like my OB.

  • I only saw the MFM once...at my 19 week appointment where they did the big scan and everything. The MFM was the one who said he didn't need to see me again unless my OB found something later on. I did have an ultrasound and cervical check at every appointment with my OB though. I think if she wouldn't have done that I would have been a little nervous about it. I had the boys at 36w1d and both were over 6lbs and completely healthy so it worked out for us!

Similar case for us! I only saw an MFM once because of a blip on the quad screen. Everything was fine and I went back to only seeing my OB.. Not that unusual if your OB has experience with multiples.

  • I would be really disappointed if my OB pulled me from my MFM. He is my favorite appointment of the month. I also love my OB though and they work great together.

My OB doesn't do a monthly ultrasound, she leaves that up to the MFM.
