Overnight feedings

I need help! What are you doing to get baby to space out the middle of the night feedings? This kid is trying to kill me!! He was going a good 6 hours between feedings and only waking up once per night.... Now he's awake every hour and a half to two hours! I've tried everything..... At least it feels that way. How long is this 4 month wakeful period supposed to last??

See my NSSTN post below. Hopefully yours fixes sooner but I'm on week 8 of this.

To answer your question though if it hasn't been 2hrs I don't feed her. One of us will soothe her back to sleep (sometimes she wakes half an hour later).

  • This was us a few weeks ago. I finally broke down and ordered the baby merlin magic sleep suit one night and it has helped us out big time. I was very skeptical, but willing to try anything at that point. $40 well spent! She still has nights where she is up a couple times, but 4-5 hour chunks of consecutive sleep are sure better than being up every other hour!
  • We try to keep him awake from 6-9 PM (a bottle, play time, a walk, a bath, etc).  I make sure he's had about 30-35 oz throughout the day.  I usually rock him to sleep after giving him a few oz to "top him off."  If any of those things don't happen, he usually wakes up.  Last night we only got to 27 oz and sure enough, he woke up at 1:30 AM.  Night before -- he got to 37 oz, and slept from 9:20 PM until 7:30 AM.

I'll have to try to keep track of exactly how much he is eating. It's hard because I'm nursing in the evenings though. I know last night he slept too much during the day because we were in the car but on a normal day- I should be able to get longer stretches.

Oh yeah, if you're nursing then IDK what to tell you..  we went to exclusive pumping because of a wrist injury I had, and now he's on formula.

I've debated bumping bedtime back to 830 - 9.   She gets cranky tired around 6:30-7 but if I make it a nap time she wakes back up and is happy for a few more hours before total meltdown.   We have done it a couple times when we wanted to do to something in the evening.    On the other hand I love my quiet time after 730 when she's out like a light and I can do whatever I want or need around the house.

  • I'm in the same boat, I have no idea how to break this pattern, it has been going on now for 4 weeks.  He goes to bed around 8pm, but sometimes passes out around 7pm and we have to wake him up for a bath and bedtime.

Up every 2 hours at night to eat, until I have to get up for work at 5am.  not a whole lot of sleep going on around here.

Also since I have gone back to work (which is about when this new sleep pattern started), he eats sparingly during the day from a bottle, only averages 10-12oz from 6am to 6pm when I am gone, and then nurses every hour or so in the evenings.  So I think he is trying to make up for his eating all night long... how do you get them to eat MORE from a bottle during the day.

Believe me, I don't love having him awake that long, but it has helped immensely.. he usually takes a nap after he gets home from daycare around 5, while I'm bustling around getting dinner ready and prep for the next day.

  • Thankfully, DD only wakes up once, but still. I'm over it. Especially since she WAS STTN for a while. I honestly have no idea how long we've been doing this, I tried to say 2 weeks, but DH corrected me to add a week...so yeah.

We got 2 nights of 10-6am this weekend, and the two nights back to waking up at 3ish. I do think part of her issue now is that she's got a nasty cold and can't breathe well, so she's having a hard time eating. Also she is SO freaking distracted while she nurses these days. I'm tempted to use my nursing cover at home just to keep her focused.
