February 2013 Moms

starting solids!

my son turned 6 months on the 28th & we had his 6 month appointment today--we're going to be starting solids soon. am planning to mostly make my own purées because healthy/easy/cheap but will also buy some premade food because convenient.

that said: opinions on ella's kitchen vs happy baby vs sprout vs other organic brands?

also, any other vegetarian mamas out there? would love to know what you're planning to introduce first as far as proteins!

  • We are also making our own purees. We're probably going to go with Earth's Best for convenience type stuff, because at organic and available at our supermarket, but we'll be using it so rarely that I doubt we'll have a ton of brand loyalty. I just know I want to buy a brand that strictly does organic stuff, rather than an organic line from a big company that's just trying to cash in on a "trend."

DH is vegetarian and I eat very little meat, so DD won't be eating meat too often. When we give it to her, it'll come directly from a local farm, but I think mostly she will be getting protein from stuff like lentils, black beans, etc. I'm actually planning to discuss this with the pediatrician when we go to finish up her 6 month vaccines to see if he has any specific recommendations, or if he thinks we should see a nutritionist to make sure DD gets enough protein, since for now her options are a bit limited what with nuts and eggs being off limits.

  • Our babies are birthday buddies!  We haven't started purees yet, but we've done three days of rice cereal and today is the scond day of oatmeal.  We've been using Baby Gourmet cereal, which is prganic.  It's made in the US, but I think it's a Canadian company (i'm not sure if it's available in the US, if you're even American.  Super helpful, I know).  At any rate,  DS loves it.  I'm not sure yet what we're going to do for meat - DS is still FF so I'm not worried about his iron at this point.

  • i do a combo of homemade and store bought but of the store bought i like earths best and ellas. i did buy a pack of sprouts brocc/peas mix but we havent introduced any combos yet. i do NOT like gerber organic and neither does DS, FWIW. (thats for purees...we use gerber organic rice cereal and its fine)
  • i've been making homemade stuff, but bought some plum organics and earths best pouches for times when i need something convenient. i chose those brands because i found really good sales on them. haha.

i was vegetarian for over 10 years but now eat some meat. mostly seafood and chicken breasts. so baby will have meat eventually, but probably not much because i don't like or eat pork and don't really keep or cook red meat in the house because i don't like it enough to eat regularly. i'll probably hold off on introducing meat for a couple more months though.

so far i've been more focused on introducing a variety of flavors (adding herbs to the food i make) and not worrying so much about protein since he still drinks (pumped) breast milk for 95-99% of his food intake.

beans, beans, beans.  Limas and black beans are a great BLW food.  I also feed my babies a lot of lentils and some seared tofu (I don't go too crazy with tofu bc of phytoestrogens).
The Ella's Kitchen pouches had some controversy a couple of years ago with mold being found in some of the pouches, but I would *think* they had resolved that by now after a boatload of bad publicity.  We've always loved the Plum Organics and Happy Baby Organics pouches.  We really only do purees in pouch form, and only when we're on a plane or out and about.
with the beans, do you just soak/serve cold? i'm planning to try some BLW as well...basically i'm leaving it up to my son. if he digs purees, cool. if he'd rather feed himself, awesome.

i picked up some pouches today & already felt like...this is dumb. i could puree this myself in 5 minutes ; p so i don't see myself buying many of them, really. but i'm sure they come in handy on the run.

i definitely need to read up on eggs to decide how i feel about them because what i HAVE read is all over the place. we have backyard chickens so i'd like to give my son eggs sooner rather than later--but again--need to do some more research. worth looking into!
