April 2014 Moms

MIL horror!

The day we found out we were expecting our first child my MIL came into town and I swear I've never been so miserable in my life! She's been here for a week and a half and I till have a week to go! I know the hormones are making me get more irritated than usual but is it really so much to ask for her not to chain smoke on my patio every 5minutes!? I used to be a smoker and the smell never bothered me before but now I want to puke just smelling it on her clothes! She knows how much it bothers me so now she piles on a bunch of perfume and that makes me want to puke everywhere too! Is it really so bad for her to just show a little consideration and slow down a bit or get an e-cig? My Husband and I live in this tiny one bedroom right now so there's no where to escape the torturous odors! But when I lock myself in my bedroom she gets emotional and says I don't like her (which I'm not a huge fan of in the first place) but then she talks to her son about moving in!! I just can NOT wait for this week to be over so she can go back to being 3000miles away from us!

  • Oh man that stinks. Literally! But she is going to be around forever. I think you should gift her an E-Cig. I bought my mother one 2 months ago and she hasn't touched another real cig since. That being said make sure you get a good one not the cheapos from the gas station. I will warn you though my husband smokes on as well and sometimes the smell of the vapor makes me queasy. Good luck.

  • Just a warning that ecigs may be even worse than regular cigarettes. They have like antifreeze in them and all sorts of other bad chemicals. May make you gag less, but you'd still be breathing all of that (potentially worse) crap in - https://www.fda.gov/newsevents/newsroom/pressannouncements/ucm173222.htm

The FDA only tested a handful of cartridges from two Chinese manufacturers. Ignore their B.S.

Liquid for e-cigs contain 3-4 ingredients - nicotine (optional, derived from tobacco leaves), propylene glycol (deemed SAFE by the FDA, used as a preservative), vegetable glycerin (if you eat angel food cake or many other products - this stuff keeps it moist, also deemed SAFE by the FDA) and cake flavoring (who doesn't like cake?!).

These FOUR ingredients are FAR LESS DANGEROUS that the 400+ carcinogens found in cigarettes, not to mention the tar that destroys lungs.
(EDITED because tar doesn't cause cancer - I have pre-coffee morning fog going on!)

I recommend BLU (can be bought at Walgreens and some other places) if you want to try to get MIL to use an e-cig. I use an Ego and fill my own cartridges, but hubby used Blu and liked it. Plus it's far less of an investment (around $10) compared to my setup. ;-)
  • (Btw - the vegetable glycerin is also in antifreeze - because it keeps it in a liquid state. There's water in antifreeze, too.) ;-)
  • I used them sometimes when I quit but they are not the same. I had a patch on as well as a non nicotine e cig for habit reasons, aka drinking wine and chatting with a friend on the phone for hours, stuff like that to get me over the habit. Eventually I didn't want the e cig anymore, and patches tapered off as was directed. But that was to actually quit. Good luck!

  • Congrats on quitting Nicole! My first pregnancy, I was bad - I smoked through the entire thing (DD was born perfectly fine, weighing in at 7.5lbs 3 wks early - pre eclampsia). This time around, I've been using the e-cig for 2.5yrs, and now with being pg, I stepped down the nicotine from 18mg to 12mg a few days ago, and will step down to 6mg in a couple weeks. It's not recommended to go cold turkey in the first tri. I plan on weaning down to AT MOST the 6mg, though if I can go 0mg all the better!

OP - you have the patience of a saint! I'd have went off on dear MIL many times by now - especially with the "moving in" part! OMG! Lol
  • Thanks ladies for the info about e-cig I will definitely invest in multiple for her! She leaves tomorrow TG! I appreciate letting me vent! Congrats to all my April moms-to-be!!

  • Go to wickedecigs.com. ( I think that's it. Google always helps) but that's where I ordered my moms and you get 2 starter ecigs with flavors. It's was around $60. Very good quality and way cheap. My mom still smoking real cigs but "says she's still using it". I can't win!!! Sorry about your MIL I feel your pain mine goes through ALL my stuff when she comes to visit and takes pics of every room in the house.
