to Zofran or not to Zofran

With my first born I was so severely sick at seven weeks that it was difficult to even drink water so I went on Zofran… It was a miracle drug and my son was born perfectly with no complications.

I'm now seven weeks with my second and I've been moderately sick since five weeks and it's only getting worse. I'm exhausted and I just feel downright awful. I haven't thrown up yet and I know it will be safe to take Zofran but I'm still hesitant to take anything if I don't have to... sigh!

there's no reason to suffer if you don't have to, and it's getting tough to take care of my almost 2 year old (I'm a SAHM) but I'm still hesitant!
anyone else feeling torn?

  • I'm 6 weeks and never got sick with my daughter first time around but now I'm puking everyday. I've tried lemonade, hard candies and ginger ale. I started taking Zofran and cant believe how it helped so quickly.:-)
  • I want/need it
  • FTM here that has been struggling with nausea since the start of week 6 and its getting worse... sorry if this is a dumb question (i dont know anything about Zofran), but what is the downside? Are there side affects? I'm thinking of calling my Dr tomorrow to ask for something, i'm sure she can give me more info but thought i'd ask here first.

  • I have zero side effects but I'm sure that's not everyone's story.
  • I was torn but I need it. It just depends on what your threshold. If you think it's affecting your parenting then I think you know your answer.

Constipation, headache, fatigue (all of which are common pregnancy symptoms as well).

The only real side effect I had when I took it the first time was constipation but it ended up being a trade-off i could live with because I wasn't throwing up and sick. Zofran was originally made to treat nausea in cancer patients and it works wonders. But keep in mind it is very expensive if your insurance will not pay for it and some insurances will only pay for it if you try other things first, which i did, and hated! There was still times when I would gag and throw up but I definitely was not constantly nauseated like I was before I took it!

  • I won't have my first OB appt until next week (I am 7w2d now).  Will they call in a prescription for this if I haven't been in yet?  I am feeling so sick all the time!

Why do they wait until week 8 to see you when you are soooooooooo sick weeks before that?

  • I will happily take it...if my doc would give it to me!  My RE refused.  I have my first OB appt tomorrow and I'm hoping they take me seriously.  I've lost 5 pounds in the last 2 weeks because of nausea and now the throwing up just started this past Saturday.

  • the biggest fear is becoming dehydrated! if you are so sick it's hard to drink water that's dangerous ! def call/ talk to your ob!

  • I am glad you are feeling better! I was sick 5+ times a day for the 1st 16 weeks with LO #1 and I refused zofran. I gave in this time around. I can't believe I made myself suffer last time when I had options.

  • Do you think a cnm (midwife) could prescribe Zofran? Or just a doctor?
I have an appointment on Thursday and hoping to get it.

  • I've been nauseas since about 5 weeks but it's only from about 6am-12:30pm it's so weird and then I'm fine the rest of the day. Besides the point I got an RX for zofran but I'm also very heidant to start it. I guess ill give it a shot tomorrow
  • I've been seeing both (hoping to have a VBAC) and it was the certified nurse midwife who prescribed it to me!

  • @sayysayy13
I'm right there with you! it's ok to question anything you are prescribed! (I always ask the pharmacist if things are safe when I'm pregnant) I even took it with my son and he was just fine and I'm still hesitant to take it… It's our job as moms to take care of my baby's starting now.
That being said it really is something that is safe for you to take and there's no reason to suffer if you don't have to!
