Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Low in iron

I rarely post so here I go. I just came back from check up, we did blood work and dr notified me that lo is low on iron, but over all healthy. Lo is still drinking breast milk and is 9 months old so with eating it seems to be mostly fruits and few veggies. The only option the dr gave us was to feed her meat and egg yolks but, we have yet to try any red meat and eggs she will have a bite or two then spit out. I am living abroad in China they start feeding solids to babies early as 4 months and stop breast feeding at 6 months. The dr said my milk doesn't have enough iron for my lo. So with lo being a picky eater, any one have any ideas on what to give lo to eat to boost her iron up?? Thanks

Re: Low in iron

  • I would google "iron rich foods" - if you think LO is too picky for any of them, a vitamin is probably your best bet (like PP suggested).

  • You said you haven't tried red meat. So why don't you try it now? We give LO pieces of steak and lean hamburger all the time (mine is a total carnivore though, he eats all his meat and then likes to play and squish his veggies). If she doesn't like it I think spinach has iron so you could try that.

My son is obsessed with puffs, and when I asked our pediatrician if we should tone it down since they are basically junk food, he said since they are usually fortified with iron, they just look at them as an extra iron supplement. Sounds a little dodgey to me, but who knows??
  • Green leafy vegetables have iron.  Red meat has iron.
Smoothies or steamed and food-processed green leafy vegetables served with some form of red meat.  Season the meat like you would for yourself (obviously avoiding things that make it too spicy).
Try any and all NATURALLY occurring iron-rich foods before you go with iron supplements.  They can be binding, and then you'll have to deal with constipation issues on top of anemia.

  • Thanks for the output ladies I will keep trying different foods and make some smoothies, and hope she takes a liking to one of the options. She will eat the puffs but only a few here and there. I just hope this picky eating stage will be over soon. So I know lo is getting enough nutrition

  • DD is fairly picky, but she will eat scrambled eggs if I put shredded cheese on them. Maybe try that?

  • We use Floradix.  It's an herbal iron supplement.  I put a 1/2 tsp in their bottle of pumped milk at bedtime.

  • It's pretty normal here for the dr to request blood work to check minerals in the blood, this is my husbands translation. So might not be completely accurate lol. We have done research and apparently the test we did is not very accurate, and many countries do not make this test anymore. She is now a meat eating she seems to be more interested, but rarely wants to be spoon fed she would rather feed herself
