We're getting ready to go on a 3 hour flight to Portland. Any advice/tips? I've heard mixed reviews on giving babies benedryl. Our LO is 6 months old. Keeping our fingers crossed that all goes well!
I had to give benedryl to my 8.5 month old for a food reaction and everything I read said not under 6 months, and only under a year as per Dr's direction. So I wouldn't give it. But I flew with DD last at 7 months and she was fine. I fed her on takeoff and she slept most of the way-planes have great white noise, so maybe you won't have a problem either!
No to the benedryl. No need to drug up a baby in hope they are too doped up to cry.
I flew on 4 planes with my 4 month old in July. She was perfectly fine on all the flights. She slept through many landings and take-offs (not drug induced sleep) the ones she was awake for she was perfectly happy with her toys.
I fed in airports instead of holding off and trying to feed on plane. I figured I'd rather she goes on fed then trying to get her to focus and feed in an awkward position on the plane. She took her soother on plane to help with ears, but not convinced her ears bothered her.
No Benadryl. I flew on a 5.5 hour flight (5.5 hours there and back) with my 4.5 month old and she was fine. I just followed her normal schedule, holding her for her normal nap times and feeding her her normal times. I brought toys but she was more interested looking around anyway. I also brought a pacifier for take off and descent but her ears didn't bother her
Little Riley-our first little girl coming March 1st, 2013 (or sometime around there;)
I have never given kids benadryl while flying. My five have been to Europe twice, and back and forth from Miami to Canada several times. I don't believe in for a non medical reason giving you children medicine. It should be used for it's purpose, not to make your trip easier.
Just flew a 5 hr flight with my 6 month old and he loved it. He slept on and off and when he was awake he loved looking at all the people on the plane. The white noise from the plane made it really easy for him to nap longer.
2 hour flight with 7 month old DS went well, my advice or suggestion, pick a seat in the back of the plane or the front of the plane, we were in the middle of the plane because everyone told me it doesn't matter where you sit, guess what it matters, when your child fills their diaper and drinks are being served and there are carts every way you look and you have to sit there with a stinky baby, it matters! Changed our seats on the way home, and of course he made it through drink service, but filled his diaper again when the captain announced our approach and I couldn't get up to change him. Oh the joys of parenting! Good luck!
We flew with our twins at 4 months, a 2 hour flight. They did awesome. We fed during take off and landing. They slept much of the way. I also packed toys for them. I bought new toys that they had not seen yet. I wore one of my boys in the Boba carrier while he slept. I just had to un-click it in the back of me. I highly suggest baby wearing, because you will be hands free getting on/off the plane. We are flying a few times in the coming months.
