EBFers, my doc answered a question for me.

I had wondered what I ought to do with WCM now that Emery's one but still nursing like a 2 month old.  He's been taking milk here and there for a few months now, just in oatmeal when we share it, or in ice cream, or bites of my cereal.  The last month or so I've been giving him some in sippys, but nothing super regular.

Our doctor said if he's nursing that much, (so much, SO much still) there isn't any need to worry about giving him WCM, he'll get the fat and nutrients still from my milk.  I'm still giving him some when I think of it and when I think he wants it, but it's hit or miss.

Anyone get this advice?  Anyone else get different advice?

Re: EBFers, my doc answered a question for me.

  • This is EXACTLY what I'm doing with DD2 and did with DD1.
Although my doctor says to aim for 15 oz of dairy(cheese, yogurt, milk). I fall way short of that though. Most milk comes right back out of her mouth. She sips it and spits it out.
I never really worry about it. Both girls were/are boobaholics. I feel like she gets what she needs.

  • I have been horrible about Vitamin D drops.  My ped said that I do not have to worry about Vitamin D drops if I switch to WCM. I am still BFing/pumping.  I have a stash to at least go another even if I stop pumping at work.

I am feeling like I need to be better about the drops.  If you continue to BF, do you plan to still give vitamin D drops?

  • Sounds like good advice to me.  If Liam was still nursing so much still, I wouldn't even think of WCM or be worried about it.  I think if I was a SAHM Liam would totally be like that!  On the weekends he wants to be like that, but since I've stopped pumping, I just give sippies. So go forth and EBF and not worry!

  • I remember @jayandem saying here that if baby is nursing at least 3 times a day, you don't need to supplement with another form of milk.

My Dr. basically confirmed that and said to just go with the flow if he's getting a wide variety of foods, which is easier said than done for me. We have had luck with coconut milk too, so he's dropped quite a few nursing sessions since he started drinking that.
  • My doc said the same thing but to give WCM here and there to get him used to it.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • W is nursing at least 6 times in 24 hours, and he gets WCM (actually it's 2%) in a cup a couple of times a day. Mainly, just to get him used to it.

If they're nursing at least 3 times a day, WCM isn't necessary. W also doesn't get any supplements; he eats enough so I don't worry about it. The pedi never mentioned it.

  • our pediatrician said the same thing- no need for milk so long as i was breastfeeding. DS still nurses and gets bottles of pumped milk at daycare, on average about 5 times a day. she did suggest that we let him have a little cow's milk now and then so he was used to the taste if we wanted to give it to him in the future.
