Baby Led Weaning Update

Anyone want to do a baby led weaning update?

My LO is a bit younger than most of y'alls since he was 15 days late, so we only started solids this week. Before that I would give him a raw carrot stick to gnaw on, but that was mostly for teething purposes! But we've begun in earnest now. So far he's had banana, avocado, carrot, cucumber, apple, and a little bit of spaghetti. I don't think much of it is actually get in him; he's mostly just playing. But it's so cute and funny to watch him figuring it out! There's still a lot of gagging, and it's taking a lot of self-control not to freak out and remember that gagging is OK (choking is not, obviously). He makes crazy faces when he puts the food in his mouth, as if it's the craziest thing he's ever done. Which it probably is! My MIL suggested giving him some rice cereal at dinner to help him sleep longer, but when I looked at it in the store, even the organic hippie kind had all these ingredients that I didn't recognize, which totally turned me off. (We tend to follow Michael Pollan's food rules) So I think we'll stick with real food!

So, if you're doing baby led weaning, what foods has your LO eaten? Any favs? Tell me all about it!

  • We're not doing pure BLW by any means, but I do give her carrots, apples, cucumbers, or whatever is at hand to keep her occupied while I'm eating lunch with DD1. She loves to gnaw on the food, but she isn't eating anything. I also give her purees, though, and she has just recently started to actually eat them. Even then it's only 1 Tbsp, though.

BFP1: DD1 born April 2011 at 34w1d via unplanned c/s due to HELLP, DVT 1 week PP
    BFP2: 3/18/12, blighted ovum, natural m/c @ 7w4d
BFP3: DD2 born Feb 2013 at 38w4d via unplanned RCS due to uterine dehiscence

  • We've been doing it for about 6 weeks now, although we started very slowly. She no longer looks surprised or confused when she puts food in her mouth, and she seems to be eating some of the food purposefully now, although most of it still ends up on the floor. She's had broccoli, banana, pears, avocado, saltines (unsalted), mum mums, grilled chicken, fish, bagels, toast, graham crackers, strawberries and an orange slice. I've also given her oatmeal and a couple purées, but she grabs the spoon and feeds herself.

We're doing blw and I could participate in a check in. DD is also a little behind tho. We gave her watermelon a few days ago bc she was going crazy to have it. She seemed to like it but gagged and we decided to stick to our original plan of waiting until at least 6 months and that isn't until sept 14 bc she was so late! But she is sitting up, has the pincher grip, is starting to teeth and losing the tongue thrust and definitely wants to put the food in her mouth so we will be looking to start soon. I would surely join a check in when we really get started. We're also skipping cereals until later and we sour all of our grains so when we do intro cereal it will probably be lacto-soured oats like I eat now for breakfast every day. I want to try to just let DD in on what we are eating for dinner when we are ready to try again.

Tell me more about this. I've never even heard of it! What are the reasons/benefits?
  • We started with BLW - bananas are his favorite I think.  However, I decided this week he seemed hungry, but unable to actually ingest any of it on his own, so I gave him some purees and he was so happy. He likes to take the loaded spoon and feed himself that way too.  I did a mix of both with DS1 too, so I'm good with whatever works out in the end. I'll be damned if the kid didn't master the sippy cup on the second try too! Took DS1 months!

  • Souring (or really "soaking") grains makes the grains more digestible. This blog has helpful beginner info. https://www.kitchenstewardship.com/seriescarnivals/soaking-grains-an-exploration/
Especially the section "why soak grains"
We use kefir or kefir whey and water to soak our rolled oats, rice and beans but you can use lemon juice or vinegar as well. We also make sourdough bread, before we used to buy sprouted bread at the store. We make exceptions for grains while eating out though we rarely eat out. But we prefer the taste of soaked soured and sprouted grains since we have been doing it for a couple of years.

  • We have been BLW for over a month now. I am really lucky. Family support is amazing, my MIL (step) BLW her kids, so when we visited for a family vacation, I didn't need to explain it. My Ped supports it (and he is in his 70's) and my own parents seems to be adjusting well. My own dad told me not to "kill his only grandchild" when we first started, and he himself has fed DS cantaloupe and toast fingers! DS has eaten many things. He is now actually eating cucumber almost down to the peel, and sucks the juice out of meat until it turns white. He finds peaches sour and I have a wicked video of him making a crazy sour face that had him rocking into the back of his high chair. I have fed him almost anything I can think of and I just love that I can sit down and eat with him... That's my favourite part... Even if I do have to keep saving most of his lunch from the floor. My only thing is this... In the beginning, the instinct to pull food out of his mouth when he chipmunked it was huge. I really had to just pull myself back and let him figure it out. In the end, he always just spits it out. It took me time to relax about it.
