Why is showering so hard??

I can't do anything these days without getting out of breath. I'm not in the best shape of my life, but definitely not bad enough to warrant this kind of wind-sucking. Showering is what really gets me. I get winded, dizzy, and weak after showering, all of which leads to me getting nauseous. Then I have to lie down for a few minutes, making getting ready take twice as long as prepregnancy.

Is anyone else getting this way? Or am I just in worse shape than I thought?

Re: Why is showering so hard??

  • YES! Showers take it out of me too! I've tried cooler showers and its so uncomfortable I get the same way as with a warm shower! Before I found out I was prego i was training for a 5k, doing weights with a trainer, and roller blading daily so I know I'm not that out of shape.
I feel so icky that I don't take showers daily anymore! I told DH he is on smelly patrol, if I start to get smelly he has to tell me ;-) DH is on board because he has seen me after showers and feels SO bad for me!

  • I find showering exhausting as well. My doc said its the change in temp and our bodies trying to regulate. I have to work up the energy to shower and then usually need a lie down afterwards before I can get dressed.

I find that cooler water helps. I keep a bottle of (room temp) Gatorade to sip from when I start feeling light headed.
That's a good idea, thanks! I too get wiped out from showering. It takes lots of effort to blow dry my hair afterwards.

  • Even cooler water does that to me. I have added 15 min to my routine because I know I'll be laying down for that long before blow drying.
  • This happens to me. My solution has been to shower every other day. I've been told that daily showers "are so western culture" by a friend so I'm embracing it and enjoying the extra 30 min every other day :)

  • I hate showering! I just complained about this last week! I'm shedding so bad so it takes an extra 20 minutes in the shower to get through washing and rinsing my hair! I've refused to style it after all that work! Lol!! I also have to leave the door open, have a fan in there and sit for a few minutes after until I stop feeling sick! Can't wait for this part to be over!!

  • Showering can be rough but I struggle more with trying to do anything with my hair other than putting it in a ponytail. With DS I had to bring a stool into the bathroom if I was going to blow dry my hair.

As for getting winded after a flight of steps, that never went away for me with DS. It stayed about the same through second tri and got a little worse toward the end of third tri. I'm already feeling ridiculous at 13 weeks so I can't wait to see how this goes!

  • This thread is mind blowing to me! I love showering and sometimes shower 2x daily. Maybe try invigorating scented body wash...
  • I don't think this has to do with your shape, I'm in great shape and I can not handle showers either, have to keep them cooler also I agree with keeping a cold bottle near, the other thing that helps me is leaving the bathroom door open when I shower. That way it doesn't get all steamy, but I understand this may not be an option for everyone.

It has nothing to actually do with showering, I love showering too. It is the fact that when we shower it makes us dizzy, sick, and it feels like you can't breathe. Also, we may already use invigorating body wash, I know I do. I understand this may not be symptoms that you are having, but it is for us, once we aren't pregnant anymore showering won't be difficult anymore. I had the same problem in my first pregnancy. :)
  • I haven't noticed a big difference when showering but I can't walk ten steps without losing my breath. Even in the first few weeks of pregnancy I noticed that. That being said- I'm about to shower now- maybe now it's been pointed out ill notice. I feel like I've been hit by a truck ALL THE TIME so maybe it all blends in!!!! I have a friend who is pregnant and continually tells me how good she feels and how much she lives it and I secretly want to punch her in the face!!!! Haha
  • My mom came to visit and my house is a wreck so I recommended we just meet in town and shop a bit... I might be dying lol Just walking around at a leisurely pace is wearing me out.

  • I haven't blown my hair dry in like 8 weeks. Most of the time I shower right before bed so I can just crash afterwards. I started to sit down sometimes in there but that just makes me more lazy haha. Glad I'm not the only one with this issue!

  • It takes me so long to get ready for work in the mornings now that I actually take my blow dryer and straightener to work with me a few times a week :/ and I always have to lay down in front of my fan when I get out of the shower because I'm out of breath and exhausted and hot....

  • I'm so glad I'm not alone in this! Showering has been getting worse for me the last couple weeks, I'm downright miserable after shower now. I definitely am having to add extra time to my morning routine. Unfortunately I don't have the option of not doing my hair before I go to work so that just makes it even harder; I have a 40 minute commute to work on a good day and now that school has started if I don't leave the house by 10 till 7 I'm definitely going to be stuck on the road for about an hour and a half due to the increased traffic. Mornings are just miserable

  • Well ladies I can't tell you what a relief it is that this is a common symptom! Good luck all. Thinking clean and sweet smelling thoughts for all of us!
  • I remember that from last time. With my HG it's so bad that I actually use a shower chair. I just can't stand in the shower. And I still have to lie down after.

  • It's not just you. Showers wear me out too and I usually have to lay down for a bit afterwards because I'm breathing so heavily and feel dizzy and weak. I chalk it up to the fact I'm nauseous most mornings and standing doesn't make it any better. :-S

  • So glad I read this. I thought I was the only crazy one that gets their butt whipped by showering and getting ready in the am.
  • I have the same problem my doctor suggested cooler showers and to eat before showering. I hope this passes soon because sometimes nothing helps and I have to lay down bc of feeling dizzy and sick for a few minutes. It takes forever to get ready :/

  • I had the same thing with my last pregnancy. I actually passed out. Then I figured out it was because I was taking such hot showers it was raising my body temperature to a level that wasn't good while pregnant. Started taking cooler showers and it solved the issue for me :-)
  • Showers were exhausting for me until about 10 weeks, it will get better. I used to shower and wash my hair every other day, but since my body temp is up and I'm sweating more, I shower everyday but still only wash my hair every other day. It works for me.

  • I hate having to style my hair afterwards I swear I cant do it. AND I didnt shower last night haha :D I was too tired and my feet were too sore ! Blahhhh
  • So glad I'm not the only one!  Our bathroom has a stand-up shower (no tub) but I still took my showers sitting down until about 2 weeks ago.  It was just too much to stand up in there!  I'm finally able to stand up without feeling dizzy.
