One of my six month olds ended up in the hospital this weekend with a fever of 103.1, a severe chest cough and wheezing. The doctor prescribed albuterol to be used with a nebulizer, in addition to a liquid steroid and antibiotics. We tried the nebulizer on him yesterday afternoon and he was extremely fussy all day long and wouldn't nap. In the evening, his fussiness turned into excitement and giddiness and he was practically bouncing off the sides of his crib. He stayed up for several hours past his bedtime and was wide awake and full of energy. After looking it up online, I discovered that albuterol is a stimulant. I'm worried about giving this to him again. Has anyone else gone through this with their little one? I'm just wondering if the benefits outweigh the cons, Especially given the fact that he acted like he was on speed after using it. Seriously, my husband and I were joking that he was acting like he was high as a kite. And I don't even think he got a full dose, to be honest.
Re: Albuterol?
I have an albuterol inhaler for myself and my doctor told me that it is safe to take while breastfeeding, but that it is a stimulant so it can cause the baby to be a little more energized than normal.
I'd call your pediatrician and tell them his reaction and your concerns and see what they say.
