(Mostly) Homemade Baby Food

Does anyone else cheat and sometimes puree frozen vegetables? I've been doing it for things like green beans and peas. I make sure the ingredients are the vegetable only and I figure I'm going to freeze the puree any way so what's the difference, right? :P Just curious if anyone else takes a shortcut!

  • I use frozen peas! The steamfresh ones from Birdseye are great. Two minutes in the microwave then into the processor. Takes me 3 minutes to get a whole bunch of food!

  • I buy the Birdseye steamfresh too! I know - it yields so much! I bought the "family size" this week and I have an overflowing ice cube tray!

  • Frozen veggies sometimes are higher in nutrients than pnes from the produce section, since they were frozen at their peak, instead of sitting in a store for a few days.
  • Same here. I buy the frozen trader joes organic green beans and peas.

  • I have read that you aren't supposed to refreeze frozen food - have y'all had any issues with refreezing?

If your LO's still like it I would love to know cause I will definitely start doing this!

    Here's a good article:

Refreezing food is bad because it degrades the quality and taste, which is more noticeable in meat than in vegetables and is worse if you thaw it at room temperature rather than in the refrigerator. It's not actually a "health risk" to refreeze food. I throw everything in the freezer whether its been frozen previously or not and have never noticed a change in taste, personally.

Also, I think there's a difference between thawing raw food to cook, then refreezing the cooked product, and thawing and refreezing something that's already cooked. Or thawing and refreezing something you leave raw, for that matter.

  • i've used frozen peas and berries. for these particular things, it's cheaper/easier to get organic this way.
