Bed Sharing - Bed Coverings & Baby's Position

I know that doonas / duvets are no-nos for safe bed sharing, so I wanted to ask what bed coverings, if any, do you use when bed sharing? Sheets, blankets, duvet, nothing at all? Also, my LO Loves sleeping on my chest and does so during the day. At least once during the night I end up falling asleep with him in this position, and me propped up on pillows. Does anyone else do this? Is it safe? We actually have a side car crib, but I think that LO doesn't like being left all alone, so want to bring him closer for cuddles - what sort of cuddle positions do you use when bed sharing or is it best to give baby his own space in the family bed? My LO is 3 weeks old so I'm more interested in what you do/did when your children were under 3 months. Any other tips or advice appreciated - thanks!

Re: Bed Sharing - Bed Coverings & Baby's Position

  • When DS was that little (and still now sometimes) I formed a half-moon cocoon around him with my arm (hand behind head/under pillow, elbow straight out) above his head and my knees bent. He wanted to be touching me while he slept, so I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have been cool with the sidecar either. ;)

As for blankets, we used sheets and blankets but only up to our waist. I like to sleep shirtless (makes the all night buffet oh so accessible), and I saw a cool idea the other day where someone cut and hemmed a snug-fitting undershirt just above the bust, so their shoulders were covered and not cold, but breasts exposed for easy nursing. If you sew, that would be a good way to stay comfy. :)

If you're worried about falling asleep with him on your chest and lots of pillows around you, when you lay him that way, if you set a timer on your phone to wake you if you accidentally fall asleep, that might help keep you both safe.

Here are the generally accepted guidelines for safe cosleeping:

  • So referenced this blog to aid in safe co-sleeping when J was an itty-bitty. It has great photos.

For my attire I wore a sleep bra and pads because I leaked so much in the early days. I would slip out the boob she was eating. I can't sleep with my tummy bare, so I have some cheap tanks from target that I wear with the shoulders down like a tube top! In winter when J was tiny I used the same set up as above, but added a zippered running jacket, which is tight fitting and kept the tail behind and out of baby's way.

I found the behind the back pillow to be the best tip so that I coul relax back and not worry about rolling on J.

    Good luc and congrats!

  • The dude is almost 5 months and he still sleeps with me in a c-shape around him like emerald described. I put a pillow behind my back. He props his legs up on mine. He can eat easily all night and I get rest.

When he was little bitty he would sleep on my chest. I would put pillows under both of my elbows and put my hands on his back. This kept my arms in place and we both got a little sleep. Not a lot.

I wear fitted pajama pants and go top less. It's hot here!

  • Thanks ladies for all your helpful advice & suggestions!
  • My guy is 7 months. Up until a few days ago he'd spend most the night in-between DH and I. We even bought a King because I was tired of falling off the bed in our Queen. However, lately I've been able to get him to go back to sleep faster in his swing. So he'll be in his swing, he'll wake, I'll nurse him then put him back into his swing when he's stopped and gone back to sleep.

I'm sorry. Tangent. When he's in bed with us he doesn't get any blankets. I keep a big blanket at the foot of the bed to act as a kind of barrier in case he somehow makes his way down there, (He can't do something until he can. There's no warning!)  If it got cold I would sometimes hold him close and fold my blanket over his legs and hold it while I hold him. But he's gotten so squirmy that he doesn't really cuddle that much. Usually now he'll nurse until he's about asleep then roll over to face Daddy.

    Yeah. I'm writing too much.
