How do you handle waiting for the first appt?

My first appt is this coming thursday and I can't stop thinking about what if there is no heartbeat.  I know there is nothing I can do to prevent it either.  I am just such a nervous person since my m/c.  I just keep telling myself everything is fine and baby is healthy.  I think part of my fear is because I don't really have any symptoms.

  • The pp couldn't have been said any better!! This is what I do every day and I always tell myself everything is fine. It has been a little more on my mind this time as I have had a few close friends over the past year that have gone through situations with miscarriages and one who had a blighted ovum.... I am thankful every day for my blessing and can't wait until my appointment September 27th... Good luck with your appointment!

  • I am spending my time barfing while I wait, lol, but between episodes of being sick my husband reminds me if it is meant to be it will be and we have no control over it anyways, at first it came off harsh (maybe it's the hormones?) but he is right, I can't control the future so I just have to stop worrying. It won't help or hurt the situation.

The only thing I can do is drink water, take my vitamins, and try to eat healthy (which has been a challenge).

I went through the same thing.   I did a few things:

    1) Repeat to myself, "Today I am pregnant and I love my baby" and "The majority of pregnancies result in healthy babies."  Really, honestly I have tried to be thankful for every day of my pregnancy.

    2)  Pray. I'm not really religious (more spiritual?) but I have found that prayer eases my anxiety.  If prayer isn't your thing then try meditation with positive visualization and positive sayings (see above).

    3) Think only about things that you KNOW will happen. When you picture going in for your u/s, think about how you will drive to the doctor's office, where you will park, what door you will use to enter the building.  Picture checking in with the receptionist. Take yourself right up to the part when you actually get the ultrasound.  Make yourself stop there, because you don't KNOW what the outcome will be.

I know it's tough, but hang in there.  I'll be thinking about you and sending good vibes for Thursday :-)

    Well said. Agree w/this!

  • Love the responses to this! I've lost a pregnancy in the past and I am anxiously counting down to when I get to see the heartbeat! We'll get there!
  • My first appointment didn't involve hearing the heart beat.  The did blood work, urinalysis, breast exam and checking my uterus.  I did get to schedule my first ultrasound.  I should be able to hear the heartbeat at the next appointment and at the ultrasound.

It can be hard to wait for all these exciting moments to occur.  It kind of feels like the days before Christmas all the time - just waiting for all the fun stuff to happen!  I just try to stay busy - exercise for 1/2 hour, I enrolled in a free online course, talking to friends and family, planning fun weekends, thinking about designing the nursery.
