Straw Sippy Situation

I've been trying to get C used to drinking out of straws lately because I figured it would be an easier transition than soft sippy spout to hard sippy spout. Sometimes she gets that she has to hold it down and bring her head down to it to get stuff out. The other 80% of the time, she gets beyond pissed that she can tilt it up and have stuff go into her mouth. She gets crying frustrated and just gives up. I don't get it. How does she understand it only sometimes and get frustrated every other time. What's the deal? What can I do?

Re: Straw Sippy Situation

  • The kind I have won't spill. I fill it all the way up so when J tips it he still gets water from it. He sucks on it, but tips it most of the time.

A couple weeks ago he didn't get it at all. Two days ago I randomly tried again, and he got it. It's amazing what a little time can do.

  • At this age, they are learning how to make connections but the thought process doesn't fire all the time yet. This would be why kids at this age can sort of stack blocks and get it once or twice but then can't figure out how to do it the third or fourth tries. They get frustrated because they can't get it right all the time. I'm sure this goes for sippy and straw cups as well. It just takes practice. Keep offering, one day things will just click and she'll get it.
  • @twoitalians, that makes sense. I eventually gave up this morning and gave her the usual sippy.
@carolyn231723 this is the straw sippy I'm using

  • So, I have no idea if this is going to work, but here is my thought process. DS learned how to suck out of his pouches. At first I would squeeze a bit, now he just sucks it out. When I give him a straw he has no clue what to do. So I bought him some juice boxes, since I know when I squeeze he will get some, and hope it works the same way. I haven't tried it yet but we'll see!

  • DD learned to use a straw by using a normal one first that I had in my drinks. I would squeeze it so that she could just get a tiny bit up to her mouth. Took maybe 5-10mins and she got it. Has been drinking from a straw like a pro since then.

  • I would just keep offering it. It takes some practice but they'll get it.

  • We use the Nuby flip n sip sippy cups. Which are awesome bc she doesn't get anything unless she sips but it doesn't spill at all even when it's flipped up. But you can flip the straw into the lid to keep it clean while traveling. The first few times I gave it to her she wasn't interested but after pretending to drink from it myself and continuing to offer it to her she got it. Now that's all she drinks out of (no more bottles) and she can drink out of regular straws if I get a smoothie or water at a restaurant, or my drink cup at home.

  • Those that drink well out of straw cups - do they seem to get confused between those and sippys? LO drinks awesome out of sippys, but has so much trouble with the straws because she tips them back like OP's LO. If she ever gets the hang of the straw, will she be able to switch back and forth?

i've been trying different sippies for 6 months now and she's never had any interest in them at all.  tonight was the first night she used the larger version of the above sippy and she got at least a couple ounces down.  i may go back and pick up some of the smaller ones since she never drinks more than 6 ounces in a sitting anyway.

  • I started both DS1 and DS2 with straw sippy cups because I heard the spout ones cause teeth problems?  I never "taught" them what to do, they just sucked one day lol.  When I tried to give them spout sippys when they were a bit older, they didn't know what to do lol.

DS1 is still on straw sippys though and hes turning 3 in December.  He doesn't really know how to tilt his head back with a regular cup, which he probably would've learned through spout sippys, right?  Oh well, its a work in progress.
