Bi Weekly Cervix Checks ?!?!

Hi ladies! Haven't posted here in a while but always come to this board with support for my preemie.  Here is my short back story: Had my son 20 months ago at 33w4d due to an infection in my placenta which was not found out till after I delivered.  Here I am 13 weeks pregnant with #2 and put as high risk.  MFM told me that I would need weekly progesterone shots at 16 weeks to 36 weeks to deter pre term labor again and bi-weekly cervix checks.

This sounds odd to me (the checks not the shot) wouldn't you be more prone to infection if you were being checked more regularly?  I was anxious about my NT scan while they told me all this and did not get to ask many questions and was hoping to get some advice from you ladies... anyone have this done before?  I have mentioned to a few people but everyone said they didn't get cervix checks till later in their pregnancy.  They did also tell me they would stop checking me at 24 weeks.  TIA!!

  • Bi-weekly checks seem a little too much to me too. I had cervical checks every 2 weeks from 12 weeks until 20 weeks. There was shortening of my cervix from 18 to 20 weeks so they wanted me to come back at 21. It revealed more shortening so it was weekly from 21-28. I didn't have another one until 32 because both OB and MFM felt that it would benefit me more to stay at home on SBR than to travel one hour each way to get checked. At 28 weeks, I was at .6cm and I made it all the way to 39w4d when I was induced.

Mine were all done transvaginally, so I would assume OP is concerned about more opportunities for infection every time the wand is inserted. Honestly I'm wondering if that had anything to do with my infection, I had a lot of cervical length checks.

Hoping this one stays put a little longer

  • Yes, they told me they would be done transvaginal.  I have my monthly OB visit tomorrow and plan to ask her what she thinks but thanks for the responses!!

  • @GirlyGirl319 Not sure if I missed your BFP announcement, but realized I still had you on the TTC list. I will move you over to the PG list. Congrats! When is your EDD?

  • I totaly get your concern.  You should definitely bring it up with your OB.  Perhaps they can stick to the schedule for your checks but make have more precautions to avoid an exposure.  You may also want to ask about prevention practices at home too..  baths, intercourse, etc

Many OBs believe that any placenta or amniotic infection is the result of the cervix opening prematurely so Im not sure why they would stop checking you at 24 weeks if your history of infection was quite a bit later at 33 weeks.
