Daycare Questions

Sorry, I know this gets posted every other week...

We are needing to put Graham in daycare for the first time. I'm super overwhelmed due to a lot of different things going on with my family, and I'm just having a hard time gathering my thoughts. Would you guys mind sharing the criteria/ questions you asked when choosing a daycare?

Re: Daycare Questions

  • I would say all of the above and also communication. Will they give you a slip of paper with LOs day? Or will they talk to you face to face?

  • I would stick around for a few minutes and see how they talk to the kids.  LO has done backup daycare at a few centers around the city when our regular daycare is closed, and at one of the places, the lady was speaking harshly to the kids (she's opening the door and barking, move!  move!) and I found that not OK.

  • DD is at a dayhome.  For me, it was important to be able to go there with DD a few times and sit there for an hour.  It gave me a chance to see the routine and see how the owner interacted with the kids. It also gave DD a chance to get familiar with the place with the comfort of having me there.  So something like that is nice in addition to asking questions.

Since it was a dayhome, I wanted to know about certification, experience, how many kids were there and what their ages are.  She posts the daily routine and weekly meals/snacks at the entrance which is great. She includes the meals and snacks which is really helpful. She showed me some sample foods and it is all homemade which is great.

Drop off/pick up times and location are important to make sure that it is doable with your work schedule and that both you or your DH (or someone) will be able to get there on time if you can't make it for some reason.

  • all of the above plus:

If you don't take your child, do you still have to pay?
Are there any holidays/vacations in which are paid?
Do they have a substitute (if in home daycare)?
How many personal/sick days do they get (if in home daycare)?
Snow days?  Does her schedule follow the school closings schedule?

Notice the pattern here?  My son is in an in-home daycare, and we LOVE her, but she is closed a lot!  Snow days, 2 weeks of vacation (one in summer and one in winter), 5 personal days.... If we don't take him, we still have to pay.  For our vacation, we still have to pay.  She gets a LOT more paid days off than my husband and I combined!  BUT, we LOVE her.  She loves our son and he loves her.  He has NEVER cried when I drop him off.  He LOVES it there and cries when we leave.  I've interviewed other daycares, cheaper daycares, more flexible daycares... but no one compares.  So, ask these questions before you get in too deep!

  • Thank you for all the feedback! Im going to make some calls tomorrow. Is it bad I'm a little excited about him going to daycare? I think the socialization will be good for him, especially when it comes to his speech.
