Another PT issue

So J has been PT for pee since about mid-May or so. It took him a month or two to get poop down, but we made it past that and he now poops in the potty too! Yay!

The only lingering problem we still have is that at least once or twice a day he dribbles a bit of urine in his undies before realizing he has to go. As soon as it happens he then holds it and says, "I have to sit on the potty" and we go and he always does a big pee. I show him is wet undies every time this happens and he notices they are wet and I just nicely say, "Remember we don't like getting undies wet and dirty, so you need to tell Mommy or Daddy its time to use the potty before your undies get wet". And he says "okay" and acts like he gets it, but never improves.

I've heard it can be kinda an issue with younger boys as they get too involved in what they are doing and never want to break for potty time. But man, it's frustrating. He's really good if we remind him about every 2 hours ish or do kinda our regularly scheduled potty time (first waking up, before meals, before/after nap time, etc).

I was thinking maybe sticker chart to help motivate him? Or maybe just not stress about it until he gets a bit older and gets better control?

Re: Another PT issue

  • I think he may just have to get a little older to realize the early cues.  At least he has the ability to stop once he dribbles a little and make it to the toilet.  Eventually he'll stop it before he feels the wetness.
A has done it a few times where he dribbles a little and when we are home no big deal we can get to a potty in time for the big pee to come. My fear is if we are in the middle of grocery shopping or the park and I don't know where a toilet is within a minute or two.  but A is getting a little better with "trying" to go potty even if he doesn't have to, I swear there are times when I think he waits to the VERY last possible minute to go.

  • YES!  G does this.  We started PT beginning of July and he caught on after a few weeks.  Now hes doing well except sometimes there'll be a tiny spot of pee (like smaller than a penny, not big enough to go through to his pants).  I also just tell him to hold his pee longer until he gets to the potty or that he has to tell mommy/daddy that he has to pee as soon as he feels it or else his undies get wet and thats not good.  He acts like he gets it too but then it happens again.  I noticed this usually happens when hes running around playing.  Like enjoylife mentioned, atleast our boys can stop the pee once they realize their undies are a bit wet.  I'm just assuming its something they'll have to learn to control as they get older.

  • E does this too and its always when he's busy playing.  I've just been trying to get him to go more frequently and it seems to help, although mine still won't go in public so that can get tricky.  I wouldn't stress about it too much...we all have dribbled at some point or another :)
  • J does it too. If he gets busy playing, he forgets all about the potty and it is hard to get him to take a break to pee.
