C-sections

Sleeping...

Hi Ladies, I found out yesterday I will be having a C-section due to a breeched LO.  Over the last few weeks it's been hard to get out of bed, due to the lack of abdominal strength, I can only imagine what it will be like after the surgery.  Does anyone have any advice besides sleeping in a recliner or elevated up?

Thanks!

Re: Sleeping...

  • Sleep in a binder, keeps the newly loose skin from flopping to the side and pulling on your incision. I spent the first few nights home on the couch because my bedroom is upstairs with no bathroom and I couldn't make the trip up and down. Take a pain pill before bed or the first time baby needs you will be terrible getting up. It's hard but I will be doing it for a third time so I guess I got over it.

  • Everyone is different. I slept laying flat in my bed upstairs the first night home and never took any pain pills. It was just a little uncomfortable to move certain ways for a couple days. I had a great recovery.
  • Ditto pp. The first week I was a little hunched over walking at first but taking Motrin round the clock definitely helped and I was sleeping flat in bed and able to get up twice a night and bring LO downstairs for feedings no problem. Just listen to your body and take it easy.
  • Those of you who had great recoveries, were you up and moving about right away?  I have had a couple of surgeries in the past but, nothing on my abdomen.  I recovered pretty well with all of those and was able to move around very quickly but for some reason, having a new person totally dependent on me, is scaring me!
  • I found it was much easier to move about after LO was born because I no longer had her body to try to bend around. Agree with PP about the abdominal binder the first few nights being helpful. Holding a pillow infront of you as you lean forward or cough can help as well.

  • @docco11 I was up and about the first day. It was slow going compared to what I was used to (and DH was constantly reminding me to take it easy). At first, you only do what is absoutly necessary and you slowly increase your activities. It is scary to be totally depended upon, however who do you have to call upon when you need support? People will make offers, take them up on it. Even if it is to hold the baby while you take a nap. It will be alright.

  • @littlefish-MH and I live 2000 miles from our families so, it will be just us.  I'm looking forward to family bonding time but, would also be lying if I said I wasn't envious of those that have family close by!
  • I am in a recliner still...Its most comfortable for me right now..I cannot get in and out of bed without pain..

  • @bunny...thanks.  I hope you start feeling better soon!
  • I'm 3 weeks pp today. I stayed in the hospital for 4 nights and when I got home I was able to sleep in my bed laying down it hurt a little the first couple nights to get up bit sleeping with my anopheles really helped and I just got up slowly. My recovery this time was much better then with dd1. This time I was able to get up at the 12 hour mark and move around. Dd2 was in the nicu so at 24 hours after surgery I was going up to the nicu to see her by myself and just making sure I took it slow.
