Switch To Whole Milk

My sons pediatrician told us to make the transition to whole milk and wean from the bottle...

1) My won (much like me) can not stand the milk. We tried warming it and adding formula.... Still no such luck

2) The bottle has been all but forgotten, except for the bed time bottle... I'm not sure how to rid him of it... We've built such a bed time routine that if he doesn't get to have that bottle before bed he wont go to sleep... I'm not so sure where to begin on this.

Any suggestions?

Re: Switch To Whole Milk

  • we're doing whole goats milk instead.  you can buy it online in powdered form for about $8.50. one can is supposed to make 3 quarts. the stuff in the store not powdered is about $9 for 2 quarts.

granted we didn't even try WCM.

as to the bottle, i haven't a clue.  DD absolutely refuses to drink out of anything but a bottle. she'll do like 2 drinks out of a sippy and then throw it across the room.

  • I have no advice about he milk. We weaned off of formula because J wouldn't drink it anymore.

We've been working in sippy cups for almost 2 months now. He's just now starting to take the sippy before bed. He holds his sippy any other time, but wants a bottle to be held for him before bed.

The transition doesn't need to completely happen right now. It takes longer for some babies than others.
  • My pedi said to maybe try Almond or coconut milk if we needed alternatives.

As for the bottle, we are just dropping them slowly and replacing a bottle with WCM, it's working for us.  We're down to 3 a day.  At daycare he will take an extra but I'm going to cut it out by not sending it, that way they will have to give him a snack instead.

  • Maybe do the transition really slow? Like 90% formula 10% milk for a few days, then 80/20 etc. I personally hate WCM too, so I don't blame him, lol. Almond milk is a great source of calcium, but does not have the calories or protein of WCM. My kid is a little peanut, so I rely on the WCM to get a lot of calories and fat into him, not sure if you are in the same boat or not. No advice on the bottle though....you're going to have to replace it in the bedtime routine with something else, but it won't be easy. hE might surprise you though. When we dropped the bedtime nursing session I thought it was going to be bad, but it was seamless!

  • We started the transition slowly and never had an issue. I mixed one bottle 50% milk, 50% BM for a few days, then two for a few days, until we were up to 100% WCM. He'll only drink it warm, but that's how he has always been with BM as well, so I expected that.

If transitioning slowly doesn't work, I'd try coconut or almond, as they're both a little sweeter. That's awesome with the whole hardly any bottles thing...DS will not take a cup with milk in it to save his life. I'd let him have the nighttime bottle for now and not worry about it...most of us are still trying to get our kids just to drink out of something besides a bottle ONCE a day, so you're doing just fine.

  • I guess his new pedi. made me feel a little more rushed about it... She told me he needed to be off the bottle, paci and formula by mid sept.... But the more I've reasearched, I guess 15 mons is more the norm....

The paci is a whole nother story...

  • I'm not even thinking about getting rid of the paci yet. Granted he only takes it to sleep, but I haven't even thought about it.

  • Our pedi told us at his 9mo appointment to get rid of the paci at 16 to 18 months. He didn't ask about it at 12mo.
  • The thought of ridding the paci scares me.... He only takes it to sleep, but will not even think about sleeping without it.

  • DS2 will drink WCM and we just recently weaned off formula.  But he just will not drink WCM from sippys.  He'll drink water from sippys so I know he knows how to use them but will only take WCM from bottles.  He has 3 WCM bottles a day and I don't know how I'll get rid of them.   :-/

  • Someone today told me that she got both of her kids to start drinking milk by adding chocolate to it.... I was so stunned I just looked at her... as her kids ran around my office (I manage a Chiro office) like wild maniacs.... I considered it the worst advice I've gotten.

We've got him drinking Milk FINALLY... but I can't get rid of the last bottle before bed... he wont sleep without getting it....
