Tdap Vaccine

Hi ladies!

I am not sure if this has been discussed, but was curious to get everyone's opinions on the Tdap vaccine while pregnant. My doctor recommends getting it at my next visit (28 weeks), and I am not sure how I feel about it. Supposedly they only started suggesting it to pregnant women last year in 2012, because there has been a high rise in pertussis. I am really not sure how much research has gone into later side effects, since it is a newer thing they are doing.

Is everyone's doctor suggesting it? Do you plan on getting it? If not, what is your reasoning behind it, or do you have any facts/websites to look into that made you decide not to?

I found a few pages on why you SHOULD get it, but not why you shouldn't, except my friend who is a little eccentric with vaccinations. TIA

  • YES. You and your baby will both get protection from it if you are vaccinated while you're pregnant. I got it when I was pregnant with DD (we were in the midst of a pertussis outbreak in the Bay Area at the time, so it wasn't even a question), and, though I don't think I'm technically due for a booster yet, I will still ask about it this time around, because the benefits are real. I haven't talked to my OB about it, but will at the next appointment.

  • Thank you at @utlawgirl and sorry @mavgirl_73. Just got to work after my appointment and haven't had a chance to look at yesterday's discussions. I will definitely take a look later on today.

  • No worries I just couldn't find to link it.

  • DTaP is a reduced dosage for children under 7; TDaP is 11 and up, I think til mid 60s.

  • I know I'm due for a flu shot in October, which my doctor recommends for me. I don't know if that's the Tdap or not. Last time I had it was a few years ago, which they recommended because I work with kids all day. If my doc recommends it, then I'm down. She has infinitely more medical wisdom than I do.

Look up the ingredients on CDC's website and see if you are comfortable injecting that in your body. And baby's essentially....

And after that, look up the disease you're essentially protecting your baby against.
    Go from there...
  • My doctor recommended for me and my husband. I'm going to get it soon.
  • I got my shot about a year before u got pregnant. And my family is going to take it also. My mom decided that for everyone.

I ended up talking with a doctor in the family who basically told me exactly how I felt. He said its overkill unless you plan on sending your kid today care after a month or two, and since we are not, I will not be having the vaccine. He said he's told the same thing to other pregnant patients and their spouses, and would suggest the same to his wife. That was enough for me. Plus I just didn't have a good feeling about it from the beginning, and I'm pro vaccination for the most part.

Edit: I did have the shot exactly 2 1/2 years ago.
