Introverts

Don't you hate it when you get a chatty cab driver? I just want to space out and look out the window!

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

Re: Introverts

  • I don't like that either, the problem is that I often do space out and can't help it and if someone doesn't know me they might think I was being rude.

  • I hate small talk IRL. I have no desire to chit chat to people I will never see again. I would much rather space out and look out the window :) No awkward silence here!

  • The other thing is I always take Dramamine to fly and that's about the only time I take a cab. So here I am in a Dramamine stupor and I just want to sleep. We need a new car so H met me at the airport and took Howell while I took my bags. It would have been some nice alone time but I had to talk about DC politics (of which I know very little) and about how DC drivers are the worst and look at this guy over here who is driving in two lanes. They should give him two cars and licenses if that's what he wants to do. oh well. He probably thinks I'm rude or stupid.

  • I've never ridden in a cab, but I would definitely want to stare out the window and space out! Small talk irks me so...

  • I think sometimes they think chatting will equal a bigger tip?
  • I hate random chatter in ANY situation where I'm not at least vaguely familiar with the person. Like, I go to the same stylist all the time, and chatting with him is great. But when I'm getting a pedicure from some random lady at the nail place? I'd like to just fiddle with my phone. I know that makes me a totally dickhead, but it just is what it is.

  • I am both an introvert and an extrovert. I scored precisely 50/50 on a personality test. If I feel secure I will chat, but if not I will not talk.

    This. Exactly.

  • I get irrationally nervous when people I don't know make small talk. Like I never know what to say, so I just ramble off some nonsense.

  • I'm always afraid I'm going to respond in a way that comes across as weird and they'll forever remember me as the weirdo who shared too much in a chit chatty situation. Awkward.
  • The worst was a car service driver in NYC with a car that reeked and a simple request to please crack the window (dear god the smell) turned into an hour long "chat/monologue" about conspiracy theories he had. The trip should have been 30 min but he took a "short cut" to LaGuardia talking crazy all the way and almost missed the flight. I tried not to engage but I was sharing the car with a co worker and she said she felt pressure to talk or he'd kidnap us. We reported him.

  • I think the worst is when you go in for a massage and the person keeps talking to you. Like I am paying your for an hour of relaxation. Please just shut up and let me enjoy my hour of mommy time...

  • I don't like small talk in quick IRL situations - even though I'm an extrovert. Still a quick cab ride? I'm only going to know you for about 15 mins maybe. Leave me alone please.
