My travel advice is to bring a decent stroller and rent a carseat with your rental car. It's so much easier that way (& most of the carseats are new with the directons still attached).

I flew by myself with M when he was 3 months old It was surprisingly easy. I did not use a bag for gate checking my stroller and had no issues. We are flying again in a month and I am going to travel the same way I did last time.
I've flown with LO three times in the past two months. I wear her to the gate so we checked the stroller and carseat Before security. I've heard horror stories of people gate checking and the carseat and stroller getting damaged. We bought this carseat bag and teh stroller bag of the same brand: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009RNXNA/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They are fairly inexpensive and protect the items really well. We travel a lot so I think we'll get our money's worth.
