Boston Babies

moving to the area questions!

We'll be moving to the area soon (I don't know exactly where yet) and I am scared and excited at the same time.  I have tons of questions for all you ladies and learned so much from the Bump boards before our last move too.

Question #1 of many: I cannot for the life of me find a Mother's Day/Parent's Day Out program in any Boston suburb.  Is there such a thing here?  Not Pre-K but similar for younger kids for 4 or so hours a few days a week. And its not daycare either.  I currently bring my son on Monday and Wednesday to a program from 9-1 so I can have a few hours to myself.

Question #2:  Are there any drop-in daycare centers?  We have one in Cincinnati that I can bring my son anytime for as long as I want, no appointment necessary.  They're open until 9 pm weeknights and midnight on weekends.  Please, please, please tell me this exists!

I will probably cross-post this to other Boston groups I may find.  Thank you.

Re: moving to the area questions!

  • I think what you call a mother's day out program is called a toddler program around Boston. There are a couple that I know of around me.

My son will turn three at the end of November, so here in OH he is not eligible to start preschool for the 2013-2014 year.  The cut off date at most places is September 30th.  How about in MA?  Is it even called preschool?  I cannot find much online.  Thank you for helping.
  • It depends on the town and specific center or school as to what it is called I believe. Usually it is called preschool but sometimes it's called nursery school or prek short for pre kindergarten. Most of them have a cutoff of sept 1 but I worked at a private preschool in Quincy for a few years that allowed kids to begin at age 2.5. And had very limited rolling admission. Best bet is to narrow down communities and then look more specifically from there. Some cities have pre k in the public school system some don't

Edit: I didn't read the original post very well. Apologies! There are lots of independent daycares that are also preschools that are flexible with drop off or part time attendance. Still would be best to pick a community to look in as I don't think there's a specific organization like the one you mentioned. I've only worked in daycares and schools though. I'm not a mom just yet. Good luck!

  • Most preschools (yes they're called preschools) have a cutoff of 2 yrs 9mo by Sept 1, so your son should be eligible.

I am not sure where we are going to live. It's so hard to figure things out while in a different state. My husband's job is in Peabody and we don't want more than a 30 minute commute. But if we don't move until October, then won't all the good preschools be filled? Ugh. I am so stressed!
  • My church in Braintree offers a toddler program.  It runs two mornings a week from 9-12 or three afternoons a week.  I'm considering using this service once my child is 3 years old (that's the youngest they take them).  It'll be nice to have a few hours to myself each week.
