Nipples cracking 4+ months PP?

After LO was born my nipples toughened up and after about two weeks we never had a problem. Fast forward four months to the past couple of weeks and my nipples have been horrible! It started a couple days before I got my first PP period, so I figured that's what was causing my nipples to be so sore. But now, it's been several days since my period has ended and my nipples are cracked open in several spots. One is much worse than the other. Oddly, the worse one, is the breast LO only nurses on 1-2 times a day. He really hates that boob for some reason.. Anyway, I have no idea what is causing this, or how to fix it. I feel like every time he nurses/I pump,I look down there is a new open crack that wasn't there before. Why would this happen all of the sudden and how to I take care of it? TIA.

Could his latch have changed? My DS is 5 months and always had a great latch, but around 4 months his latch started to get shallow. I think it's when he became distracted and just a bit lazy about eating. I started to notice nipple pain again, so now I just make sure I correct his latch and the pain goes away. Try using coconut oil on your nipples and your pump flanges...it helped me.

Now that I think about it, he has developed this bad habit when my milk doesn't start flowing in under five seconds. he will be latched and pull his head back forcefully, pulling my nipple until the latch eventually breaks, and he does this over and over again. Maybe that is doing it? I have no idea how to stop him from doing that though, I've tried holding him so that he can't pull back but he only freaks out more if I do that.
