We are thinking DS has an amoxicillin allergy. He had the antibiotic back in June and the day after we stopped it, he broke out in hives all over his body. It lasted about 5 days. We thought it was due to his sickness since he didn't get the hives when he started taking the medicine. Anyways, he was prescribed it again this past week for an illness (fever, red throat, stuffy nose) and now on day 8, he is getting hives again. After speaking to his doctor today, he said stop the medicine and give Benadryl and that's it is probably an amoxicillin allergy. Does anyone have this allergy or does anyone else's kid have it? What medicine is given in replace of this antibiotic if he needs it? I will follow up next week with the doctor for more questions but is this something they can be tested for to make sure that's what it is?
Weird thing is DH is on amoxicillin too and broke out in a crazy rash all over his body. He was able to be seen at the place that prescribed him the antibiotic and they said it was probably a reaction as well. DH's mom has a penicillin allergy- are these the same thing? Is this something that could be genetic? Just looking for more info. Thanks y'all!

Oh and I'm a major Harry Potter Nerd
In our family, we learned that medication allergies correlate quite closely across generations... My family has Ibuprophen and Sulfa as their main medication allergies... My Dad found out the Ibu allergy because I learned the hard way that I had it after I had DD, and I discovered just recently when put on Sulfa based antibiotics that I have the same sulfa allergy as my Dad - NOT pretty to be blown up like a balloon covered in nasty itchy red hives..
When in doubt, it's best to avoid it from here on out. Not sure that it's something they can really test for, but you can always ask.
