Forward Facing

Before you assume, this isn't a post about turning Jacqueline around. It's more of a concern for those who won't listen.

My SIL got in a heated discussion (that I stayed out of because we don't see eye to eye on anything and I refuse to fight with her highness) and she was trying to say that a baby would be safer in an accident even if forward facing because they would likely be asleep and limp so thy wouldn't react the same as adults. She said that her son has become a terrible traveler because he is bored rear facing so they planned to turn him at 15 months.

I go on Facebook today and I see a picture of a little girl, just turned 1 ad already forward facing. And captioned "I'm a big girl!"

So I went out, found some information and linked it on my Facebook and said essentially that in was doing research and thought I would share for anyone who is interested or curious.

I feel like it's not enough though!

Re: Forward Facing

  • After having some trouble installing a seat RFing in my mom's car, I had people insisting we just FF him. "He's getting tall." "He only needs to be 20lbs." Blah blah. They even convinced my uneducated SO for a minute until I schooled him. The more you know......

  • My aunt told my mom she could NOT believe that I still had DD rear-facing.  She said my cousin's ped said that by 1 year old they should be forward facing.  My other aunt said it is a law in Iowa that at 1 year old they should be forward facing.

I did not even have to look that one up - of course no law would be set on age, it would be on height and weight.

    So frustrating.

  • This is my SIL.  Her kids forward faced at 1, if not a little earlier.  Last November DD 1, 2 & 3 and I went home for our family "Christmas"  We have it every year the first weekend of November.  I took Leah's RXT and the Angel adjuster for her seat, hoping that at just over five, she would choose to rear face.  She did.  I had to listen to my sister tell me, that I was sheltering her.  It is her choice to rear face.  I rear face until four, after that it is their option to go forward facing.  I harness until six, at which point it is there option.  Summer is moving into a booster seat this week.  She is 7 and a half.  Leah was given the option, but chose instead to go rear facing again.  She is a peanut at six, and still fits into a Foonf well.
  • BTW, I'm so glad I'm on this board because if not, I'd be uneducated about it as well.

This is so true. I knew and planned on following the newer recommendation with DD2. But there was a part of me saying that its not really that big of a deal because DD1 turned at 15 months and she's fine. Until I watched some videos posted here and really understood the reasoning behind the suggestions.

  • @sjandva. I agree. It's not like they changed the recommendations just to piss people off. Somebody, somewhere did their research.

Me too! I always thought 1 year or 22lbs (Jacqueline is 18lbs 9oz) was when you turned the seat around. I'm glad I pay attention to what all of these women say, it's helped me out a lot!

  • One of my friends has a son just a few weeks older than DS and I saw a pic on FB of them going to the zoo in her Mom's car... The boy was FF. I gasped and really wanted to say something outright, but I'm taking the passive approach an just posting things on FB. This friend has always been so holistic and AP about her parenting I wondered how car seat safety passed her by.

At one, even up to 2 the head is still the heaviest part of their body, in a crash the inertia will kill them, they don't have the neck strength. There is nothing that can disprove toddle head weight and inertia.

This and the words "internal decapitation" terrify me. I could never turn Jacqueline around and walk around with a clear conscious and know that she is safe.

  • This type of STUPIDITY really gets me fired up. I have a friend who turned her DD around at SEVEN MONTHS because she weighed 20 pounds. AYFKM? Now that I am fired up again about it, I am forced to post something on FB. Isn't it your NUMBER ONE job as a parent to put safety and health of your kids before all else? And to be on top of new recommendations of 2013??

  • It's true. That's why I posted the link, in hopes that someone would read it and get some info.

  • SIL and I had quite the long discussion when she purchased her 7 month old a forward facing booster seat and despite our conversation wanted to use it anyway because she had already purchased it and didn't know where the receipt was and thought it would be easier to just go with it because it wouldn't really make a difference. After our long discussion it seemed she had no intention of getting a seat that could rear face, so I told dh he better talk to his sister. He sent her a text message telling her to get a different seat and she did. I'm glad she listened to someone!
  • I admit, I was one of those misinformed moms... after being sent many videos and articles, I got so terrified I moved my LO back to rear facing. He gets a little frustrated sometimes and kicks the back of the seat trying to stretch his legs, but I'd [now] rather a frustrated baby than an unsafe one.

I thank the women of this board for teaching me and helping me become more informed. I recently told a friend who has a 29lb 9mon old who she moved forward facing last month that is wasn't safe. She asked if I had moved my LO to forward facing and I told her I did, because I was misinformed, by my [former] pediatrician, and others, that it was ok for him to move.

We've since moved pediatricians (for more than just the reason) who prefers us keep him rear facing as long as we can.

I regret for even a minute letting him be that way... and the fact that I tried to make myself feel better about it was even worse. I hope other women can learn before something terrible happens... I am forever grateful I got the message before something truly unspeakable happened.

I feel like we've been through this. Am I wrong? Or was it someone else who had a ginormous baby last week?

I think a couple weeks ago there was someone that posted on Sept. 12 about having a big baby(I can't remember the exact weight. 28 or 38?) and turning ff. she caused a big stir over there and then brought it here.

  • I swear to god I thought the same thing... She said the weighed him on their personal scale and that he was 29 1/2lbs... my husband hand I were impressed... He does wear 18mo and they fit him perfectly... We were really taken back by that too.

Oh FFS. I answered the PP's questions regarding seeing the big baby post before.  No one judged you in this thread.
