From formula to whole milk = constipation

I transitioned lo from Alimentum formula to cow's milk over a period of a month. No issues accepting whole milk which I though it'd be the main challenge. Finall a week ago we completely stopped formula and I notice major constipation, like never before and diaper rash as well which has not been an issue. I have not heard of milk being a cause of consitipation but it is. I tried prunes, pear juice, over 6 oz of water a day, adding some kefir to his yogurt but nothing works. He s pooping but hard small balls :( Is this something he will outgrow as he gets used to milk? He was on Alimentum which is very broken down compare to whole milk. Please share if you have a similar problem and what to do! Thanks!

Re: From formula to whole milk = constipation

  • How were you transitioning the milk?  Were you doing majority formula with a little bit of milk and then slowly changing the ratio?

Both kids had bad reactions to whole milk when we first started introducing it.  Each time we stopped and switched to formula or continued BF-ing.  They would get calcium in other ways and then a few months later we would give it a go again.  Time to give their bodies more time to mature seemed to help for us.

  • We had this issue and our pedi encouraged us not to give up. He said it was likely the milk fat causing the constipation, not a dairy allergy. This was frustrating because it's the milk fat that is so important for brain development. We mixed in an ounce of prune juice, which helped. But still if she ate too much cheese and had milk, it would be awful again. When it got really bad, we tried a tsp of mineral oil in her milk, which worked. It was really rough for a few months. Then sometime around 17 or 18 months it was like a switch flipped and her body adjusted. The issue was gone like overnight. As you're transitioning, make sure you limit other full fat dairy products. Full fat cheese and yogurt will only add insult to injury. GL!

  • Thanks for the replies. Yes, it was a slow transition, for a month or o, adding milk to formula. However his night time formula had very little milk. I'm tempted to go back to formula but today he had a not o hard poop. I called the dr and the RN said to add probiotics and prune juice. I'm trying everything but is the problem continues I may have to o ack to formula. It is heartbreaking when cries while pooping.

  • I'm going through this right now, I'm glad I'm not crazy.

I just cut out his cheese and yogurt since I  just realized he was maybe getting too much.  Prune juice does nothing for him these days.

Glad to hear that it will hopefully get better.

  • 6oz of water a day doesn't sound like very much tbh. My DD drinks at least 12 oz of water a day, plus about 10 oz of wcm. Less milk and more water if she's eaten a lot of cheese or yogurt though. How much wcm is he getting?
