Baby Showers

Super Bowl shower?

I'm due 4/21/14 so I think the timing would be good for a Super Bowl Sunday shower in early February. I'm a big football fan, and my family always has a party that day anyway. I always look forward to the buffet of great tailgating food. I think we could start at 3, and if any ladies would want to stay to watch the game they could.  I know its way different from the standard croissant sandwiches and cake type shower, but I know that DH's family will throw that type of shower.  Those just seem kind of stuffy to me. This idea just suits me better and I think everyone could let loose and have a great time.   Any thoughts?

Re: Super Bowl shower?

  • I like the idea of a football themed shower if you are a football person, but it's really up to your hostesses what the theme will be usually. What do they think?

  • I'm just thinking far far ahead. It would probably be hosted by my mom, she'd be totally up for it.

If its for just family, then go for it. But I'd you are including friends, keep in mind that a lot of people have super bowl Sunday traditions that they might not want to give up. Like we always go to my mothers house, the neighbors come over and it's a big thing - I would probably skip a shower rather than skip that party unless it was one of my close friends - and then I'd be pissed I had to miss it.

I'd do the theme another weekend if you plan on inviting more than just your family.
  • If I were close family, maybe I'd do it, but I really wouldn't want to spend the entire day, starting at 3, there. And it would be a pain if it were going to the shower first by myself and then H had to drive separately to meet me there for a Super Bowl party. As a hostess, I also wouldn't want the trouble of throwing two different parties on the same day, but that's just me.
  • I think Sam brings up an excellent point. And on the flip - there are people who hate football, could care less about the Super Bowl, and if they really think the shower is going to be all about football, they may opt to just skip.

  • Something else to consider is this might be one day Dads world not be happy their wives leave the kids at home. For my husband this would be the one day of the year he would balk at me going out.

  • The "shower" part would not overlap the game. Thanks for all the input.
  • I think you're putting the cart way before the horse. You haven't even had anyone offer you a shower yet, it may be a bit early to be trying to plan a theme already. And ditto PPs. The shower part may not overlap the game but knowing my husband, on the day of the Superbowl he likes to have the guys over all day to BBQ and hang out. Having to be the only one watching our LO would be a pain for him that day.

No, but I imagine that's all people will want to talk about. I hate football and would be miserable.

  • I personally would not attend a shower on Superbowl Sunday. I enjoy it like a holiday with friends and family. Even if it were at the place we normally celebrate, it would be an inconvenience. DH and I would have to take two separate cars. I always bring tailgate food and DH would then have to prepare it and bring it. I think it would be rude for you to suggest it to someone who offers to throw you a shower.
  • Yes I would only suggest this idea  because it is my mom, I wouldn't for anyone else offering to host.  Because I have such a close relationship with my mom, I can't imagine not giving my input just because she is the "hostess."  I'm a control freak and I want at least one shower that I can choose to my taste.  Thanks everyone!

When planning an event like a shower you need to keep guests taste in mind. Many of us have given the feedback that Superbowl Sunday is not the best day.

  • Sorry but I think it is a bad idea. The superbowl is the largest unofficial American holiday and many people have traditions on that day. I know I would decline an invite. If you pick another day you will have a much better turnout. Trust me.
  • Maybe I'll just do a football shower on another Sunday.
  • Are your friends and family as into football as you are? Personally, I'd be miserable.

  • The shower would not involve the actual football game. Its just a theme, like any other shower with fun food.
  • If it's the overall theme I think it's a cool idea. However, Super Bowl Sunday might be the worse day to hold a football themed shower. I would do it on a different day.
  • Theme is fine, but hold it Saturday, maybe?  Or the week after, so you can discuss the game/commercials?  I know lots of people would have other plans or be inconvenienced, as PP suggested, so I would advise against the actual day. It's too bad, because I think this would be a refreshing theme, but the logistics simply aren't friendly.
  • I would see what the hostess wants.  If she asks, then you could suggest it.  If she doesn't ask, don't mention it.  Personally, I am not really into football so I would be eh about the theme.

This is a much better idea, actually.

    I would decline too.
This.  I love football and I do not want to watch it at a baby shower.  Plus my husband would have to watch the kids when he probably wants to be drinking beer.  Have a football themed shower the day before or another time.

  • I enjoy football, beer, babies... and I don't have long standing plans for superbowl sunday and would go wherever a party was. (In fact, this year, I moved across the country the day before and ended up watching part of the Superbowl while eating take out dinner at Wegmans.)

But I still think the combo shower/superbowl party would be a LOT of work and long day. You'll still have 8-9 weeks after that and I think a shower either the week before or 2 weeks or so after would be fine.
