Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How do you know when to unswaddle?

Other than when they start rolling over in the swaddle, how do you know when they are ready to unswaddle? My baby is 12wks old and has started fussing off and on through naps, but when I go check on her, most of the time, her eyes are closed. I'm wondering if it's time to unswaddle. She doesn't act irritated when I swaddle her, and actually seems to relax, and she falls asleep with no problem.
Thanks!
Kristina

  • It seems like she still likes it then. I knew when my lo would break her arms out of every swaddle, no matter how tight. She isn't rolling yet but got to a point where she wanted her arms free. Now we use the halo sleep sack swaddle. It swaddles her around her chest leaving her arms free. She likes it a lot. Took some adjustment with the jolt reflex, but she is getting through that.

  • in regards to your specific situation, OP, it's not the swaddle. she's entering a period of crappy naps. it happens with most babies. i've been dealing with it for a month and DS is still swaddled (he's 4 months).

You could also try a different type of swaddle, but it sounds like she's just going thru a phase.

get the "wonder week" app - i know i sound like a broken record, but it's very helpful.

  • it sounds like the fussing is normal sleep behavior.  when my LO was 12 weeks he was a super noisy sleeper

i knew to stop swaddling at 3 1/2 months when he would wake up every 2 hours in the night struggling to bust out of the swaddlle.  that and he started trying to roll (pulling legs up and to the side)

  • We didn't look for any cues. It was not one night and we decided to forego swaddling. She didn't complain. I think LO was at 9 weeks
