Natural Birth

39 weeks today and no signs of labor!!

And I'm not into rushing Mother Nature. Yes, when ripe the fruit will fall!! But with that being said, I'm over it. And anxious about when it will start as far as child care, getting my birth team here, etc. I have an acupuncture appointment scheduled for next Thursday, 2 days shy of 40 weeks. Has anyone used this to start labor moving along?

Second question. And I feel ridiculous asking as this is my 4th baby. You'd think I'd know. But every birth is different. With all my others I had signs seething was happening, specifically days and weeks of Braxton hicks. This time around NOTHING. Any stories about going zero to sixty out there? I have a sneaking suspicion thats what this nugget has planned.

Have a great holiday weekend, ladies!!

Re: 39 weeks today and no signs of labor!!

  • I've given this example a few times before on this board so I apologize if others already know it well- when my mom was pregnant with me she went to her 42 week apt and was not effaced or dilated at all! Nothing! She was pretty upset obviously. I was born that night in 4 hours from start to finish.

  • With A. I never had BH. I woke up one morning with completely random, inconsistent contractions. I wasn't even having 1 an hour consistently. I thought it could still be weeks. I was just over 38 weeks.

In the middle of that afternoon, I had 2 super long, super strong back labor contractions. I opened my eyes, told DH (who was right in the room with me), "this is it! Get everyone here now!" And 2 hours later I was holding A.

This time around, I am having tons of random BH. I am over it. I am about 37 weeks. I'd be just fine if LO decided to come soon.

  • With my second I didn't have a single sign of labor coming . At 41 weeks 2 days at just after 8 pm contractions started and by 12:15 am I was holding my little one . This last time around ( my fourth) I had been having contractions on and off for weeks but nothing the days leading up to labor. No bloody show no loss of mucus plug nothing . I didn't start having contractions till around 10 am July 14 th ( i didnt start timeing them till 10:30 am)and delivered my baby at 2:56 pm that day. For me having signs means nothing. With my first I had a 10 1/2 hour labor with the only sign being bloody show . With my third I had a 29 hour labor with only 2 being hard labor hours and had no signs either . You just never know . I hope yours is quick !
  • I had no signs of labor coming until the day I had LO (at 40w6d).

  • I remember only having sporadic BH contractions throughout my pregnancy. By sporadic I mean like a few once a week or every other week.  I never experienced constant BH or any other signs that labor was coming. The day I went into labor I had a high rupture and contractions/bloody show started right away.  If you would have asked me earlier that morning if I thought I would go into labor I would have said no way.  I delivered at 39 weeks 4 days.
  • Thanks for sharing all the "no signs" stories. It helps. Today I made peace that it could be two more weeks!! I just wish we didn't even entertain the notion of going before 40 weeks. The hypnobirthing book mentions it's safe to add ten days to a second time moms due date. Ugh.
  • I was about 1cm dilated and 50% effaced for WEEKS.  I had an appointment on Friday and I was in the same spot.  My water broke Monday morning at 2AM and he was here at 7:14AM.  It can happen, for sure!

I can't say whether it made the difference or not, but I had used EPO twice vaginally on Saturday and Sunday nights before he was born.   I know my body was probably ready but I'm thinking the EPO helped soften things up just enough to get things moving along.

  • I had no signs either and ran 3.5 miles the day before, was sleeping well, comfortable with good energy levels. Water broke and once I was in active labor it was only 1.5 he's till I had a baby in my arms.

I'm kind of feeling like this. Plenty of energy. No complaints. Still exercising. I have acupuncture starting Thursday. Weekly chiro adjustments. I KNOW it will happen. I'm inflating my birth pool tonight. I'm having stress about not being able to get everything set up in time. Maybe checking off a few to-do boxes will help. Really, I just want all this insane nesting/cleaning to end!!!!
  • I'm feeling the same as you, anxious and over analyzing!

  • @LifesPeachy isn't it the worst? Had a midwife appt this morning. Nope, no contractions. Nope, nothing's happenening. Totally anxious and over analyzing!! And why??!! Right?! Baby can't stay in there forever??
  • It will happen soon. Like you said, baby can't stay in there forever! Try and focus on something else. Make plans to do something specia,l so baby can come and change those plans. ;P

With both my girls, no signs of labor at all, and my water broke while sleeping and I was holding them several hours later. GL!
