Big Baby Comments

Ok so all of you who get annoyed about people saying your babies are big/fat/chubby... I finally get it. It used to not bother me and I still love calling DD a chunk cause I think it's cute and I know she's gonna grow out of it.

But, we are visiting DH's hometown in WI (which is going surprisingly well) and we went out to grab a few necessities at the store. Some old woman comes up beside DD's stroller and says, "Well you sure don't look like you miss any of your meals!" and then she also mistakenly called her a boy...

DH and I were both like wtf, why do people think it's ok to say stuff to babies that they would never say to adults. I really wanted to tell her that she better hurry because we don't know how much time she has left (cause she was old). Of course I didn't say it but I was thinking it and was just annoyed.

Re: Big Baby Comments

  • People say the stupidest stuff.  Your DD is adorable!!  I love the smile and that face...what a cutie pie!!!  It sucks to have people say that, Morgan was called "fat" a week or so ago by some lady when I was changing her diaper and it really...really bothered me.

So annoying! Please tell me you at least corrected her on the boy thing! ;)
We get comments occasionally, too, but not quite that blunt.

  • I must have a "bitch face". No one says things like that to me. I want to smack the rude people for you guys.

  • I hear ya sister lol, dd is not chunky it's all in her cheeks. The cheeks make her look like a "fat face" as some kind stranger told her. On the flip side, we always get comments on about how beautiful she is, people love her cheeks, and get lots of comments about her eyes. So people are not all rude, but seriously some people don't think, or observe what a baby is wearing lol.

  • As much as I can empathize with you on the "fat" baby comments it still makes me absolutely livid when people tell me that Killian looks "exactly" like his big brother... Normally not a big deal but big brother is my step son and I've spent the last 5 years hearing how he looks exactly like his mother, so these people (mostly DHs family & her family) are telling me my son looks like another woman - Grrrrrrrr!

If it happens again, say something like, "Was that a compliment? Because I couldn't tell".

If strangers said it, it wouldn't be a big deal, but if family says it, yeah, I can see how it would bother you.

  • I absolutely agree with you, it is very annoying and rude. People just have no idea what they are saying and how it feels on the other end. I had someone say that he would have said 6 months after I told him my son was 8 1/2 months. I thought, OK, are you saying you were close because you knew he was a baby, or are you saying that you think he's small, in which case, shut up. I don't get it. As for the calling her a boy, I would get that with my daughter if I dressed her up in hot pink polka dots, so don't worry, some people just have very, very poor eyesight I guess!

  • People just have a thing for saying dumb things in general. We used to have a huge dog (he was like 130 lbs), and one time, when my husband, his son and me were walking him, someone said, "hey, is he walking you or are you walking him?" And SS goes, "hey no one's ever said that to me before. Good one!" It was awesome!

When I saw the other post someone made about her baby being called "fat" I almost posted this same thing you did in response. I hear alllllll the time "well she sure doesn't miss any meals does she?" I always want to ask why they would make such a stupid question! "Well no...stranger...she hasn't...I'm not in the camp of making my baby go hungry,...thanks for checking" it's so irritating. I never know what to say! I normally just smile and say "yeah,..." Like what else do you say? I feel it's like when we were pregnant and strangers would make dumb ass comments. There seems to be a t-shirt to wear for every comment you get. Maybe we can come up with onsies that say "Yeah...that's right...my mommy feeds me!" Lol

I also hear "is that all from breast milk??" How in gods name is that ANY of your business and what the fluck else would it be from?? Carrot cake???

  • Oh an I have a coworker who just TODAY said "when are you brining that fat baby of yours back around?" Seriously. This guy has NO filter. You should have heard him when I was pregnant. Some people just need a muzzle.
Whhaaaat? You've got to be kidding.

  • All of these December '12 babies are adorable. I get the comments about my daughter's cheeks, leg rolls, etc. too. People have no filter...some are just flat out stupid. I have no idea what would make someone think they should make a comment to a mother about how her baby looks...I feel the hair on the back of my neck go up when it happens too.

@fullcirlce06 ... I wish I was kidding. You should hear this guy. When I was pregnant he asked me TWICE "So how much weight have you gained" one day it was "You're going to breast feed your baby right?!" and like a week later it was "Just don't be one of those woman that breast feeds their kids forever"
It's a running "joke" (I don't always find it funny) at work that every time he opens his mouth HR cringes.

  • DS1 was over 10lbs at birth. By a year, he was over 30lbs. When he was born, the nurse who helped deliver took him out to show the other nurses, because she "couldn't believe the size of his thighs".

I got a lot of the "he never misses a meal", "what are you FEEDING him?", "he sure is a healthy one!" and "oh my, what a big boy!" comments. I wasn't too fazed by the healthy/big boy stuff, because he was, and still is (7 years old, 75lbs, way taller than most kids his age... He's not fat, but he's freaking SOLID. He's a brick shit house.), but the feeding comments irritated me to no end. He ate no more than your average one year old. Don't just assume that I stuff his face with McDonalds and cake because he's bigger than your babies were.

People need to learn to filter. Don't tell a woman her baby is fat. Comment on his beautiful eye color, or his head of hair, or how happy he is. Not how many rolls he has on each leg.
